[edit] History
The first South Brisbane station was constructed in 1884 near the Brisbane River. It was reconstructed at the present site on higher ground on 21 December 1891. Until 1978 it was a terminal station for services on the southern side of the Brisbane River.
In 1930 South Brisbane also became the site of the Interstate Station because it was the terminus of the standard gauge railway from Sydney to Brisbane. The Interstate Station occupied land that is now used by the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre.
On 18 November 1978 the railway line was extended, via the Merivale Bridge from South Brisbane into Roma Street Railway Station on the opposite side of the Brisbane River.
[edit] Adjacent Attractions
The station is very convenient to the Queensland Cultural Centre, including the Queensland Museum, the Queensland Performing Arts Centre and the State Library.
The station is also very conveniently located to the Queensland Conservatorium and Suncorp Piazza, which are both situated within the South Bank Parklands.
