Soul of the Guardian (Japanese: 「守護者の魂」 - Shugosha no Tamashii) is episode 20 of the Fullmetal Alchemist TV series originally aired 2004-02-21.
Each of the Elric brothers is in a desperate battle against one of the guards of Laboratory 5. Al is well-matched against his opponent physically, and fends him off easily. Ed's situation is more dire. His opponent is actually a pair of brothers, executed serial killers whose souls were attached to different pieces of the same suit of armor. Ed bests them, but Al is having trouble with his opponent, the soul of the notorious "Barry the Chopper." Unable to get through Al's defenses, Barry "messes with his head," instilling doubts in Al about his own existence. Is he a soul attached to armor, or an obedient construct designed (with false memories) by his brother to love his brother? Al remembers a previous conversation where Ed tried, but failed, to ask him a very important question, and he has to wonder.
