South Gloucestershire is a district with unitary authority status in South West England. It was created in 1996 when the administrative county of Avon was abolished, by the merger of the districts of Kingswood and Northavon. Until the formation of Avon in 1974, both these areas were in the administrative county of Gloucestershire.

The district borders the city of Bristol, the unitary district of Bath and North East Somerset, the shire county of Gloucestershire and the shire county of Wiltshire. South Gloucestershire lies within the traditional and ceremonial county of Gloucestershire.
