Sorry! (TV series)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sorry! was a British sitcom broadcast on BBC One between 1981 and 1988. It was written by Ian Davidson and Peter Vincent, both of whom had written for Corbett before on The Two Ronnies.

It starred Ronnie Corbett, still appearing on the BBC as one half of The Two Ronnies, as Timothy Lumsden, 41 years of age at the opening episode; a librarian who still lived at home with his domineering mother, Phyllis (Barbara Lott) and henpecked father Sidney (William Moore). Although quite shy around women, Timothy longed to find love and leave home, but Phyllis was aghast at the idea, and constantly manipulated her son into staying at home. In contrast, Timothy's friend Frank (Roy Holder) and sister Muriel (Marguerite Hardiman) would urge Timothy to stand up to his mother once and for all. Muriel had successfully left home, and married Kevin, and as a result was viewed with distrust by Phyllis. In early series the audience did not see Kevin, although Phyllis described him as having eyes that were too close together. Eventually he was seen in the show, played by Derek Fuke.

Timothy's attempts to find the love of his life always seemed to fail, and it looked as if he would never leave home. But finally, in the final episode of the seventh series, appropriately titled Up, Up, And Away...?, he finally flew the nest - literally - flying away with his new found love, Pippa (Bridget Brice), in a hot-air balloon.

[edit] Trivia

Barbara Lott played Ronnie Corbett's mother, despite only being ten years older than him. William Moore was only fifteen years older than Corbett.

When the series began, Timothy Lumsden's age was given as 41 years old. Ronnie Corbett, however, was almost 51 years old.

Ronnie Corbett had played a grown man dominated by his mother before, in Now Look Here... from 1971 to 1973. The show was written by Graham Chapman and Barry Cryer.

Much of the location shooting was done in Wallingford, Oxfordshire, now often seen as Causton on Midsomer Murders.

[edit] Running Gags

Phyllis and Sidney would frequently shout "Language, Timothy!" when they felt Timothy had said something inappropriate.

Sidney would frequently make some rather interesting coughing noises, much to Phyllis's dismay.
