Soran Emirate
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Soran Emirate was a Kurdish principality in Kurdistan in present-day northern Iraq lasting from about 1399 CE to 1883 CE. Its capital was Rawanduz.
The name of the founder of Soran emirate was Kulos; and Soran was among few emirates which had a female ruler.
The word soran means "red place" and probably is an indication to location of one of their fortresses which was surrounded with red rocks.
The emirate ended with invasion of Ottomans.
The Kurdish dialect Southern Kurmanji, which is commonly known in Iraq and Iran as Sorani, was named after this emirate. The present-day region of Soran (at the Rawanduz district) in Iraqi Kurdistan was named after this Emirate.
