[edit] Biography
Sophie Webster is a fictional character in the British soap opera Coronation Street. She was born in 1994 to parents Kevin Webster and Sally Webster, a sister for Rosie Webster. Her character was originally called Lauren, but Rosie kept calling the baby "Sophie", and Kevin and Sally were persuaded to legally change her name.
Although for the first five years of her life, Sophie’s parents were very nuch in love, her dad Kevin’s affair changed everything. With Sally struggling to bring up her girls on her own, she made bad relationship decisions - most notably when she went out with psychotic Greg Kelly who kidnapped Sophie.
Kevin and Sally were reunited and her family put back together. Unfortunately, Rosie - who is four years older than Sophie - started to show signs of showbiz talent as she began to grow up and Sally went from being a loving mother, to being a pushy one.
In her desperation to make the most of Rosie’s talent, Sally sent her to posh private school Oakhill, while Sophie remained at the local state school. She’s recently become close pals with fellow Street resident Chesney Brown.
Sophie made fun of Rosie when she was starting at Oakhill School because Rosie would have to wear a straw hat.
Sophie overheard her parents arguing about Sally's affair with her boss , Ian Davenport whos daughter Gemma was friends with Rosie. She feared they would get a divorce but they did not.
For her 10th birthday Sophie said she wanted a dog but instead Sally bought her a guinea pig which Sophie was not happy about.
When Rosie was getting lots of attention, Sophie said that she had an imaginary friend , Ebony-Rae. Her imaginary friend caused lots of trouble and Sophie said that Sally had vacuumed up Ebony-Rae. After that Sophie kept calling Sally a murderer.
Sophie was desperate for a booster bra and told this to Hayley Cropper as Sally wouldn't listen. Sophie was thrilled when Hayley made her booster bra.
There were problems when Sophie was due to start high school. Sophie had gone in on her first day but later on was sent home after finding out that she wasn't on any of the schools registers. When Sally found out she was furious. It turned out that Sally had forgotten to fill out the application forms as she had thought Sophie was going to Oakhill like Rosie.
For weeks Sophie had to go without school as the headteacher of the school would not let her in. Sally looked up other schools in the area but the only one that had a place had a bad record. The head of Weatherfield High had given Sophie's place to his daughter, Jessica. When Sally was dropping Rosie off at Oakhill , she saw the Head of Weatherfield High taking his daughter for her first day there. Sally spoke to him and got Sophie a place at Weatherfield.
Sophie developed a friendship with Nicolette Sedon, not realising that they were related. When Sally found out she was furious as Nicolette was so rude. She and Sophie started smoking and one night when Rosie and Craig were looking after Sophie for Sally, Sophie sneaked out after being told not to leave the house. When Sally returned to find Sophie gone she was frantic. Sophie was later found and broke of her friendship with Nicolette.
In the summer of 2006, Sophie and Chesney started hanging out with Chesney's friend Cameron McIntyre. The trio started taking DVDs from Chesney's step dad Les.The films were 18 certificate so Sally was annoyed when she found them watching one in her living room.
Cameron then stole cigarettes and Sophie took one. Chesney refused, saying they would get in big trouble if anyone found out. Sally later found them in the alley behind the houses and smelt tobacco. The finger of blame pointed at Chesney as Cameron and Sophie had passed the cigarettes to Chesney. Later on Sophie stole money from Sally and Sally thought it was Chesney as it was the kind of thing his family did. Sophie felt guilty and told her shocked parents everything.
Sophie also started drinking alcopops when she found some in the back of Rosie's wardrobe. Rosie had got them from Amber Kalirai. Sally stormed round to confront Amber and the matter was soon resolved.
The Websters took a holiday to Paris on 15th October 2006 to celebrate Kevin and Sally's 20th Wedding anniversary. Sophie's granadad Bill joined the family as he organised the trip. Craig also joined the family. Rosie and Craig plotted to run away to Berlin to start a new life there together. Rosie though, was having second thoughts about leaving. When they arrived at the station Rosie could not go through with it and only Craig Left. Meanwhile Kevin, Sally, Bill and Sophie were searching for the pair after discovering a goodbye note from Rosie. The Websters found her and brought a devasted Rosie home.
Sophie told Jack Duckworth that she had psychic powers. She told him and Betty Williams things about their pasts that Sophie wasn't old enough to know about.
[edit] Trivia
- Sophie has been played by three actors in 12 years. The first was Ashleigh Middleton, who played the character from 1994 to 1997. Emma Woodward then took over the role until 2004. In May 2004 Brooke Vincent began playing her and is still with the show.
- In the Paris episodes Craig calls Sophie 'Big mouth strikes again'.
[edit] Continuity errors
- Sophie was born on the 4th November 1994, yet started senior school at the beginning of September 2005, when she would have been not quite eleven. Children usually start senior school the September after their eleventh birthday, so Sophie should have started in September 2006, when she would have been have been nearly twelve. This is either an error in continuity, or her age has been 'adjusted' by a year.
- Viewers were shocked in 2004 when Brooke Vincent suddenly took on the role of Sophie Webster. The previous actress, Emma Woodward, had a much younger appearance, and the change of actress was very obvious.
