Its rated genres are: action, adventure, sci-fi and comedy. It was animated and produced in Japan by TMS Entertainment with the partnership of Sega and the Sonic Team. In 2003, 4Kids Entertainment licensed Sonic X for American U.S. licensing in a joint effort between 4Kids and VIZ Media (it was formerly with ShoPro Entertainment before ShoPro and VIZ, LLC merged into VIZ Media) & distributed by FUNimation. It is also shown in Europe, Australia, Brazil and Latin America by Jetix, and in Canada by YTV. Originally planned as a 52 episode series which would be inspired by the storylines of the Sonic Adventure series, Sonic X has now expanded to 78 episodes which were shown in Thailand, and France in February and March of 2005.

[edit] Plot Synopsis
[edit] Series 1 (Season 1 and 2)
During what seems to be a routine attack on Dr. Eggman's headquarters to rescue Cream the Rabbit and Cheese the Chao, Sonic and his friends are caught in a massive and mysterious explosion that transports them to what, at first, appears to be another dimension. Separated from his friends, Sonic eventually finds himself in custody of a boy named Christopher Thorndyke, who saves Sonic's life after he nearly drowns in his pool. Chris lives in a lavish mansion, funded by his two celebrity parents, with his grandfather, Chuck. Chris aids Sonic in locating his friends, and it is not long before Dr. Eggman makes his presence known. As Sonic and Eggman race to collect all the Chaos Emeralds (Sonic wants to use them to get home to his own dimension, and Eggman wants to use them to conquer this new universe), Chris must deal with the mental problems associated with having parents that are too busy to take care of him. When Grandpa Chuck invents a dimensional portal to send Sonic home, Chris kidnaps Sonic, because he does not want Sonic to abandon him as he feels his parents did. Eventually, with the help of Sonic, Chris comes to terms with his feelings and Sonic returns to his own dimension. However, Chris vows that one day, he will see Sonic again.
[edit] Series 2 (Season 3)
It is 6 years since Chris let Sonic return to his own dimension. Chris is now nearly an adult, and has been working on repairing his Grandfather's dimensional portal. In Sonic's world, a new girl named Cosmo arrives on Sonic's planet, looking for the legendary one who can wield the powers of the seven Chaos Emeralds. Sonic, having been nearly defeated in outer space by a new enemy called Dark Oak, scatters the Chaos Emeralds across the galaxy, in order to prevent Dark Oak from using their power. When Chris uses the dimensional portal, and he finds himself in Sonic's world. His age has regressed all the way back to the age he was when he first met Sonic; however, Chris still has all his memories of the years he spent repairing the dimensional portal.
Chris learns that to Sonic, only six months had passed. During their reunion, Dark Oak and his Metarex Army attack Sonic's planet and steal the "Planet Egg" from it. Without the Planet Egg, all the trees and plants on Sonic's planet wither and die. Sonic and his friends decide that Dark Oak must be stopped, and they venture into space to retrieve the Chaos Emeralds.
After many run-ins with Dr. Eggman, and the pursuing Metarex Army, Cosmo's dark secret is eventually unveiled: She has been an unwilling spy for the Metarex all along, and the Metarex themselves are actually part of the same race of autonomous, anthropomorphic plants that Cosmo is of, having twisted and modified their bodies for combat after war overtook their planet. They now must depend on the energy of the Planet Eggs to stay alive. When the Metarex enact a plan that could destroy the entire Universe, Cosmo sacrifices herself in order to save everybody; much to the disappointment of Tails, who had fallen in love with Cosmo during the course of their adventure. It is Tails himself who must kill Cosmo in order to release her power, which would halt the advance of Dark Oak and return him to his benevolent form. Her essence is manifested in the form of a seed, which Tails later cultivates.
With the Metarex destroyed, Eggman builds an invention that sends Chris home, and Chris accepts. Before being teleported into his home dimension, he sees Sonic running below the teleporter. Chris begins crying, and then the machine disappears. Chris was apparently sent home. Dr. Eggman revives his previous rivalry with Sonic; however, this rivalry is more light-hearted in tone, as if he was simply reviving it for excitement's sake.
[edit] Series 3 (Season 4)
- On an interesting note, rumors have begun floating around about a fourth season of Sonic X currently in development. On May 16th, 2006, it was confirmed [1] that Sonic X will not be in the American 4Kids Networks's Fall 2006 line up.
- Sonic X may be in production of more episodes. According to SonicHQ, [2] TMS is listing Sonic X among the anime they are producing, although this may be because the third season has not yet been broadcast in Japan[3].
[edit] Setting
There has been minor debate as to whether or not the first two seasons of Sonic X take place on Earth. Episode 8 showed a map of the planet, which did not look much like Earth, but episode 38 showed a view of the planet, in which Texas and Africa are noticable. This must mean that Sonic X takes place on Earth, like the Sonic games.
The design of the map in episode 8 could be described as laziness to draw Earth properly, as seen in many other cartoons.
[edit] List of characters
[edit] Major
- Sonic the Hedgehog: The universe's fastest supersonic hedgehog. Since his debut on the 16-bit Sega Genesis/Mega Drive in Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic has become a recognizable icon worldwide. He is very carefree and laid-back, though cannot stand evil, and it would go against his kind nature to not help someone in danger. Sonic appears to demonstrate some traits of depression in this series, a new depiction that was previously absent from the games. For example, he appears to suffer from mood swings, is prone to being resentful towards friends when in a low mood, but is occasionally prone to a higher, more 'manic' state of mind. Despite this, he utilizes his special trademark abilities; speed, martial arts, and special Spin Attacks to thwart any enemies that may threaten the landscape, including Doctor Eggman and the ruthless Dark Oak.
- Miles "Tails" Prower: Miles met Sonic on West Island many years ago, and while the hedgehog did not take much notice of him at first, he was surprised at the young fox's ability to keep up, and allowed him to tag along. From there on up until the incident with the Egg Carrier, the two had been stuck together like superglue. In Sonic X, while Tails is hardly found with Sonic as often as he was and is able to set out on missions by himself, he still holds a special admiration for his once-idol. Tails's most unique feature is the Copter Flight (spinning his tails together like a helicopter and gaining limited flight ability), although in the anime it is rare to see him resort to this ability (which tends to upset some fans of Tails). He also maintains his mechanical prowess exhibited in the Sonic Adventure series, developing several aircraft and mecha including the X-Tornado, and developing a close friendship with Chris Thorndyke's scientist grandfather, Chuck Thorndyke.
- Knuckles the Echidna: The guardian of the Master Emerald on Angel Island. Knuckles is quite gullible and cannot seem to ever trust Sonic, especially once Dr. Eggman had once tricked him into thinking that Sonic and Tails were the ones after the Master Emerald. Even while Knuckles learned that Dr. Eggman was the true enemy and not Sonic, he still holds some resentment toward him. Sometimes he gets carried away showing off and trying prove he is better than his blue rival. Throughout the first season of Sonic X, Knuckles prefers to wander by himself. His special abilities include his glide and grind attack, his skill at wall climbing, and his digging skill using his special Shovel Claws. The others mostly utilize his special spiky knuckles. Like Tails, there has been some criticism involving Knuckles, as the show portrays him as weaker than he is in the games. In the third season, two of the claws on his fists are broken in a fight with a robot, but they are fine in the next episode.
- Amy Rose: A female hedgehog, who has self-claimed herself as Sonic's girlfriend. Once nicknamed "Rosy the Rascal," most notably in Sonic the Fighters, and mistakenly once known as "Princess Sally" (an entirely different character) in the U.S. Sonic the Hedgehog CD game manual. She and Sonic first crossed paths on "The Miracle Planet", where Sonic sabotaged Dr. Eggman's plan of clutching the Little Planet as a massive metallic base with the power of the seven Time Stones. Ever since, Amy has followed Sonic (much to his dismay) and will never let him go, regardless of his awkward feelings towards her. At one point, the two of them actually share some common ground on their feelings for one another, but it seems to be short-lived... Her primary weapon is the Piko-Piko Hammer, which she seems to retain an unlimited amount of and can seemingly pull out of nowhere.
- Cream the Rabbit: Ever since meeting Sonic in Leaf Forest in Sonic Advance 2, Cream has tagged along with Sonic and his friends for adventures and action. A friendly young rabbit who is very polite towards her friends. Because of her age, the older characters tend to look after her in almost every situation, and she mainly spends her time watching television in Chris's mansion to keep out of danger. She doesn't like violence or fighting. At first she does not defend herself at all during battles. Later, however, she decides to start helping out a little more to prove she is responsible enough by utilizing her two massive ears for flight, as well as use her best friend, Cheese the Chao, in a spin attack like Sonic's, Shadow's, and Emerl's. She seems to always be polite, including calling her enemy Mr. Dr. Eggman.
- Shadow the Hedgehog: A black, solemn hedgehog who claims to be the "Ultimate Lifeform." Created over fifty years ago aboard the Space Colony ARK by Professor Gerald Robotnik, Shadow had remained in the captivity of G.U.N. until Dr. Eggman, Gerald's heir, awakened him from cryogenic stasis. Shadow was then seen in Prison Island and stealing a chaos emerald in a museum which led the government to believe that Sonic was the one committing these crimes, due to his so-called similar appearance. Eventually, Shadow realizes his memory had failed him, and with Sonic's help they stop the Eclipse Cannon to prevent the annihilation of Earth. Recently, Shadow has been seen to team up with Dr. Eggman, though he assists both sides depending on the situation. Shadow's special abilities are exactly the same as Sonic's, ranging from speed to spin attacks, as well as an energy attack given to him called 'Chaos Spear' when obtaining rings, as seen in 2P mode in Sonic Adventure 2 and in his Super form in Shadow the Hedgehog. In the anime the gold rings on his wrists are considered Rings and keeps him from running out of power.
- Rouge the Bat: A government agent, white-haired bat who is infatuated with jewels. She tends to work for herself and conceals personal details. She originally was seen in Sonic Adventure 2 and at that time was competing with Knuckles the Echidna(who she has a crush on) to get the pieces of the Master Emerald. At the end, she takes Shadow the Hedgehog's ring after he falls to the earth. Her special abilities include Glide Grind and Screw Kick, an extremely powerful maneuver which can pierce the strongest of materials, including Dark Oak's machines.
- Dr. Eggman: A very determined villain set on collecting all seven Chaos Emeralds and destroying Sonic for good. At the failure of conquering both South Island or Westside Island, Dr. Eggman built his own doomsday machine known as the Death Egg, which failed on two consecutive occasions. Ever since, Dr. Eggman has depended on other forms of attack not necessarily conceived by himself: A mysterious water creature named Chaos, Shadow, and his own grandfather's doomsday device, the Eclipse Cannon. His IQ is said to be 300, although he acts quite immature. As to his past, it's quite uncertain when and why Sonic and he started this never-ending conflict. This version of Eggman is by far the least evil. In episode 26 once he had all the Chaos Emeralds he actually felt bad when his new robot was kicking Sonic about the place.
[edit] Minor
- Big the Cat: A huge cat who likes fishing and hanging out with his best friend, a frog named Froggy.
- Chaotix: Vector the Crocodile, Espio the Chameleon, and Charmy Bee make up this gang of crack detectives. Vector is the boss, and tries to get the job done. He tries to act mature most of the time though it appears he still isn't as serious as he should be. He also twists around words to make them seem the way they're not. Charmy is a kid and always wants things his way. He's a hyper bumble bee and is quite annoying. Espio is a loner much like Shadow, but has ninja training and is much more of a caring and calm team player.
- Vanilla the Rabbit: Cream's kind mother.
- Zero: A robot that tries to capture Amy's blue flicky. He resembles a trash can with arms.
- E-101 Beta: Member of the E-Series. He took up a lot of Zeta's roles in the Sonic Adventure saga and was able to talk. He had a grey Flicky inside him.
- E-102 Gamma: Member of the E-Series. He betrayed Eggman and destroyed his brothers (to free the animal inside them), but died in the process. He had a pink Flicky inside him.
- E-103 Delta: Member of the E-Series. He was the first robot to be destroyed.
- E-104 Epsilon: Member of the E-Series. He was the second robot to be destroyed.
- E-105 Zeta: Member of the E-Series. He was the third robot to be destroyed.
- Chaos: A mysterious, but powerful liquid lifeform that transforms each time he absorbs a Chaos Emerald.
- Tikal: A mysterious echidna girl who sacrificed her body and trapped herself and Chaos in the Master Emerald, 3000 years ago.
- Emerl: An ancient robot recovered by Eggman. Due to a translation error, his name is pronounced "M.L." in the English version. Eggman used Emerl to copy all of his enemies' moves and then get the red Chaos Emerald. Cream defeated Emerl, who fell into the ocean and exploded.
- Maria Robotnik: Shadow's friend aboard the Space Colony ARK; she died when the military invaded.
[edit] Exclusive characters
See also: Minor Sonic X Characters
- Chris Thorndyke - A well-off boy who helps out Sonic since episode one. He is the series' main human character.
- Danny - Chris' friend, he is 11 years old.
- Bokkun - Acts as Eggman's messenger.
- Decoe and Bocoe - Two robots that are constantly by Doctor Eggman's side. They once tried to form together in Episode 48, but then realised that they weren't able to do so, much to the dismay of Chris. In Episode 49 they did so in order to summon Bokkun so they can find out where Eggman is. Because they're dumb, they resemble Scratch and Grounder from Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.
- E-Series - Other than the ones established in the games, most E-Series Robots are Sonic X-exclusive and appear constantly, at least for the first 26 episodes. See below for a list of them.
- Chuck Thorndyke - Chris' grandfather (It is said his name is a reference to SatAM's character, Charles "Chuck" Hedgehog, Sonic's uncle in SatAM).
- Ella - The Thorndykes' maid
- Mr. Tanaka - The Thorndykes' butler and bodyguard
- Topaz - A female GUN agent who befriends Rouge and falls in love with Chris's butler, Tanaka.
- Nelson and Lindsey Thorndyke - Chris' parents
- Sam Speed - Leader of the S-Team and Chris' uncle (possibly a nod to American fictional mascot Uncle Sam). In the Japanese version, he has many nicknames, like "Highway Star" and "Love Express", changing them frequently. In the English version, his only nickname was "Speed King", a possible reference to famed drag racer Kenny Bernstein, who had a similar nickname.
- Francis - Another one of Chris' friends
- Helen - Handicapped 12 year old. In the future, Helen serves as Christopher Thorndykes' love life.
- Jerome Wise - At first he tries to prevent the President's reputation from being ruined by Sonic. He gets fired when it was found out that he made a deal with Dr. Eggman and ends up homeless on the streets. Following this incident, one of the show's running gags involves Jerome's attempts to gain money and generally showing him living in squalor.
- Hawk - One of the very few (if not the only) human that Knuckles actually develops a close friendship with. Knuckles rescues Hawk from being crushed to death in a temple and stays with him for a time while searching for the Chaos Emerald. Hawk repays the favor by taking out E91 and, instead of selling it as he originally planned, gives the Chaos Emerald to Knuckles.
[edit] Who is Nazo?
When Sonic X was first announced, the original pilot to promote the show showed a lot of concepts that ended up being changed or left unused by the time the series began to air in Japan. One of the more interesting concepts left on the cutting room floor was near the end of the pilot - a glowing silver Hedgehog. The only reference people were given to this Hedgehog's name, came from a file name displayed on Sega of Japan's website - Nazo.jpg. "Nazo" translates to "Mystery" in Japanese. Since then, "Nazo" has become the subject of much debate and discussion among Sonic X fans. While some are quick to assume that "Nazo" is simply what the Sonic X version of Super Sonic appeared to be, Super Sonic himself appears earlier in the pilot, ruling him out. Others assume that he is a Sonic Adventure era Hyper Sonic. In Series 2/Season 3 of Sonic X, Sonic transforms into what has been dubbed "Dark Super Sonic" - which resembles "Nazo", but is completely black. With the advent of Sonic the Hedgehog for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, questions have also been raised about Silver the Hedgehog being related to "Nazo" in some way, as they too share similar design traits. However, all of this is purely speculation, as everything known about the mysterious "Nazo" can be learned by simply viewing the one and only image of him, as neither TMS nor Sonic Team have formally commented on what he might have been.
[edit] Series 2 (Season 3) notes
In late 2004, Production Sketches of a supposed "Sonic X Series 2" began turning up. Many considered these model sheets, storyboards, and episode scripts to be nothing more than a fan-made hoax, as neither Sega nor TMS had officially announced any continuation of Sonic X beyond the original 52 episode series. It wasn't until early 2005, when Jetix France began to air the second series (shortly followed by another station located in Taiwan), that it was confirmed that a 26 episode "Series 2" had been produced. On September 10, 2005, 4Kids Entertainment began to air "Series 2" (calling it "Season 3"). Despite being created in Japan, and even dubbed into Japanese originally, the 26 new episodes that make up "Series 2" have not yet aired on TV-Tokyo, the network that ran the original 52 episode series.
Currently, the only way to view "Series 2" in its original native language (Japanese) is to purchase the Chinese Video CDs, which feature Japanese dialogue with Chinese subtitles. This Video CD uses the second version of the Japanese opening theme, "Sonic Drive", and the second version of the Japanese ending theme, "The Shining Road".
[edit] New Characters
- Cosmo - A female alien/plant hybrid that is the last survivor of her species, come to get Sonic's help. She forms a bond with Tails, who develops an emotional attachment to her. Ultimately, Cosmo must sacrifice herself in a supernormal display of power in order to redeem the Meterex.
- Dark Oak - The evil leader of the Metarex, capable of challenging even the power of Super Sonic. Wields a large sword. Originally known as Lucas to Cosmo's mother, Hertia, who was sometime his friend. Redeemed and made into a positive being by Cosmo.
- The Metarex - An intergalactic army that scours the galaxy for the life forces of planets, as well as for objects of great power.
- Molly - Orange-haired rebel fighter pilot. She was fatally shot down by Metarex warships, although the English version has her fleeing in shame instead.
- "Dark" Super Sonic - Sonic powers up in rage, drawing on artificial Chaos Emeralds, due to Black Narcissus capturing/injuring Chris and Cosmo. What results is a dubbed-by-fans "Dark Super Sonic". This entity is completely black except for his gloves, shoes, and eyes.
[edit] Thematic Differences
One major difference between "Series 1" and "Series 2" is the fact that "Series 2" is considerably darker and more mature in tone. Many characters sustain serious, nearly-fatal injuries, and several characters even die; such as Cosmo's death during the final episodes of "Series 2". In the end, Tails himself, overcome with emotion, is ultimately forced to kill her at her own request. In addition, in the final episode, Shadow disappeared as well, and no one was sure of what happened to him. In the Japanese version, however, he is seen as a shadow by Molly's grave (a scene cut out in the 4Kids dub) holding a rose. Simply put, there is no indication that any of the deaths in the series were ever reversed or negated.
The quality of the English version of "Series 2" is highly disputed. Some fans dislike the removal of some of the darkness, while others like the more visible science fiction elements.
"Series 2" does not adapt episodes from any of the games, unlike "Series 1." Also, rather than focusing on miniature "sagas" and sub-plots, the majority of "Series 2" focuses on one single plot involving the Metarex and Cosmo's origins.

Several of Eggman's robots throughout the Sonic games are designated as "E-Series" robots. Sonic X continues with this trend, and introduces a variety of E-Series robots that did not appear in the games.

[edit] U.S. & UK Opening Differences
When Sonic X was shown in the United Kingdom the Opening Intro was changed, which is redone by Jetix but they kept the U.S. Ending theme. This opening was also used in most of Europe and Brazil. This alternate theme consists of a single lyric (the show's title), repeated numerous times by a female singer.
[edit] Comic Book Series
In September 2005, Archie Comics, publishers of the North American Sonic the Hedgehog comics started a Sonic X comic book series based on Sonic X. According to writer Joe Edkin, the first nine issues will take place in the TV continuity between episodes 32 and 33, which falls between the Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 story lines. After this, the stories' chronological positions will vary for some time. Issue 16 will take place between episodes 46 and 47, right after the Sonic Battle storyline; future issues through at least 2009 will probably occur in this same time period. The series is based off the English version, although it is also in line with the original Japanese version.
[edit] Toy line
The 4Kids version of the show was backed up by a toyline. The early figures in this line were in fact re-releases of an earlier Sonic Adventure toyline, criticised by many for awkward poses and poor sculpting. The line has currently moved onto more accurate and updated figures. Taking a concept from the popular Marvel Legends toys, one wave presents each of the 5 characters in it with part of a generic E-Series robot. Fans who buy the whole wave can complete the robot as a 'bonus' figure. Further waves include the re-release the first wave with the addition of a special keychain, the Space Fighters collection and the Chaos Emeralds collection.
[edit] Trivia
- The voice actor from the Sonic games, Ryan Drummond, offered to voice Sonic for the dub - but was refused by 4Kids for not living in New York (it has also been said that Drummond even offered to re-locate to New York, and was still refused). This eventually lead to Drummond being removed (without notification) as the voice actor for the Sonic games, after Sega of America decided to replace the entire voice cast for the games with the 4Kids cast following the death of Deem Bristow, the game voice actor for Dr. Eggman. The biggest complaint with this decision was that Ryan was not notified, and allegedly only told when he asked if he would be needed for voice recordings in Shadow the Hedgehog. This conflicts with the original Japanese series, where the voice actors from the games were used from the beginning.
- When the first thirteen episodes of Series 2/Season 3 were released on DVD in the US, they were packaged as the The Complete 5th Season (with thirteen episodes being a "season", and those episodes being the fifth division of thirteen episodes).
- The cover art of the Complete 5th Season DVD mentioned above bears a resemblance to the poster for the movie Firefox, with the Blue Typhoon in the same space as the MiG-31.
- In episode 58, Sonic uses his Soap Scorcher shoes from Sonic Adventure 2 to grind a mutant plant.
