Song of America was delivered to Royal Caribbean International in May, 1982. She was the first new cruise ship built by the company in ten years, coming from the shipyards of Wartsila in Helsinki, Finland. She measured 37,584 gross tons and had 1,414 berths.

In 1999, she was replaced by ships of greater tonnage and sold to AirTours and re-christened as the Sunbird. In 2004, she was again re-christened as Thomson Destiny with Thomson Cruises, a part of Louis Cruise Lines.
