[edit] Song information
Song for the Lonely served as the first North American single and was meant to follow The Music's No Good Without You in Europe, but because of some complications it was dropped and was released as a promo CD only.
According to Cher's official web site Song for the Lonely was dedicated to the courageous people of New York especially the fire fighters, the police, Mayor Giuliani, Governor Pataki and her friend Liz. [1]
Song for the Lonely received neutral reviews from critics including one where critic Beth Massa claims that, "there are brief moments where the track riffs on U2's euphoric "Beautiful Day." [2]
Ironically, when the American version of Living Proof was released in 2002 the name which originally was (This Is) A Song for the Lonely had been changed to simply Song for the Lonely and the radio edit of this song was used as the American official album version.
In 2005, Song for the Lonely was used internationally in television advertisements for Weight Watchers.
[edit] Music video
The music video of Song for the Lonely features Cher walking around the streets of New York City. The video begins in what appears to be the 1800's. The city advances in age from the old times to modern times as Cher walks around it. The video displays buildings being created as time goes by and it also shows the different types of phases that people used throughout each decade.
The popularity of Song for the Lonely in the clubs proved to be very successful and because of this two remix video were created by Dan-O-Rama, one for the almighty remix and one for the thunderpuss remix.
In 2002, the video was released on VHS to serve as promotion for the United States. [3]
