[edit] My RfA

[edit] British Porpoise class submarines/HMS Rorqual

Hi. I noticed you wrote the article for the Royal Navy's British Porpoise class submarines. I just wrote an article on one of the boats in this class, HMS Rorqual. If you get the chance, could you look at the article and its talk page and see in what ways the article can be expanded or corrected? Thanks!--A. B. 18:48, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi there! Looks good. Sources for many RN vessels can be scarce. I have no hesitation in saying I'm not knowledgeable of naval history. I simply noticed a considerable gap in Wikipedia's coverage nearly two-years ago and wrote numerous poor articles :-D Incidentally, I moved the Rorqual page and deleted the redirects. Happy editing! SoLando (Talk) 21:10, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
Joel, thanks for the help.
... and thanks for writing the RN articles. I've slowly been doing some U.S. military history (and other historical) articles in part to honor the people that served and also to provide a source of information their families can use. That's not a very "encyclopedic" or Wikipedian motivation (perhaps it's "obituarial"), but it keeps me at the keyboard, anyway. Likewise, I know there will be kids somewhere in the U.K. trying to figure out what grandpa did in the RN that will find your articles helpful.--A. B. 21:37, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
Thank you! Many of these RN articles have been long neglected and desperately need clean up, among other things. But the links are blue/purple and this is a Wiki. They won't be like that forever :-) Being used as a source of information, regardless of whether it's for school, family history, etc., is the very essence of an encyclopaedia, so kudos! SoLando (Talk) 03:54, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks

Thanks for reverting vandalism on my talk page. I really appreciate it. :) G.He 20:51, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

No probs. :-) SoLando (Talk) 03:13, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] British Army Categories

If you look at the categories, I've kept the current regiments in each list, but removed the regiments that no longer exist back to the old category. Perhaps it would be better to have categories for former cavalry and infantry regiments, and yeomanry regiments as well. Hammersfan 07/06/06, 14.50 BST

Reply SoLando (Talk) 13:59, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
No objection in principle to former units being included, however, I think over time it would be a good idea to have a Category:Former British Army infantry regiments and Category:Former British Army cavalry regiments. That's a project for when I have more time though :-P Hammersfan 08/06/06, 16.55 BST

[edit] Blocking a user

I just wanted to ask you about user 125.236.44.47. This user was vandalizing pages today and I thank you for blocking them and fixing the pages. However, I don't know why they were only temporarily blocked. If you look at their user history, they have been given a "last warning" three times! Just block them permanently; their record more than demonstrates reason. I would also ask that administrators would look at users' histories. This person should definitely have been blocked long ago. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by TK421 (talk • contribs).

Hi there! Blocks of ip addresses must be made in accordance with Wikipedia policy, which permits only open proxy and "zombie" ips to be blocked indefintely. For more imformation, pertinent pages are located at Wikipedia:Blocking policy and Wikipedia:Indefinite blocks. If you encounter any ips vandaliising with an extensive history of abusing Wikipedia's editing privilegese, there is Wikipedia:Abuse reports. Not much else one can do, except persevere :-) Happy editing! SoLando (Talk) 00:10, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] battleships

Hi there: I think that you are the original author of the article"List of Battleships of the Royal Navy". I am working through the list, writing articles on the ironclad series. HMS Rupert(1872) does not seem to be on your list, and as a newcomer I can't figure how to edit your list the way that you have left it. Would you care, when the World Cup is finished, to put Rupert in?--Anthony.bradbury 21:35, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi! The entire content of that article is contained within a number of templates - not good! Templates should not be used in place of actual article content. But that's deviating from your initial query, I apologise. The list relevant to ol' Rupert is located at Template:List of steam battleships of the Royal Navy. I've now transferred the material directly into List of battleships of the Royal Navy. Happy editing! SoLando (Talk) 12:39, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, there was a template, and you had to go to the talk page to find the link to it each time you wanted to edit. I don't know how to change that, so if you can, that's good. What does annoy me is people putting things on those battleship pages that don't belong there, and also deleting stuff that SHOULD be there (see german steam battleships for this one). But change it to make it more consistent and to get rid of the templates all you want. thanks :) SpookyMulder 14:54, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Long talk page

Greetings! Your talk page is getting a bit long in the tooth - please consider archiving your talk page (or ask me and I'll archive it for you). Cheers! BD2412 T 00:40, 17 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Polls:

Hi. I'm just sending out a message for a new study I will be undertaking soon. It will involve surveys & polls to gather information & trends of editors on Wikipedia & other subjects. The data gathering will involve yourself recieving a questionaire on your talk page for you to fill out. I will then collect your questionaire & combine it with data from other editors. If you would like to be a part of this experiment, or know of someone who does, place a "Yes" or "No" below this message. Remember, it's only for fun & you can choose not to fill out all or parts of your questionaire once they arrive. Have a nice day... -- Spawn Man 06:00, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

Me, a scouser?! I'll have you know I was brought up on delightful vintage movies, thus ensuring I would be devoid of the accent (if not the identity) that is scouse, like, la, ya know. I've been monitoring the trials and tribulations brought upon by your... issues... with WP:FU/WP:FUC and admins (grrrr!;-) In all honesty, these images are irrelevant. Entirely new illustrations drawn by you are legitimate alternatives! ;-) Technically, I've not returned from my extended wikibreak. Study has been overcoming me. Meh. Hope all is well. Awww..pity that.
