Hi, saw your request for Royal Navy pictures and thought I should mention that I've tracked one down for the second HMS Colossus from 1890; due to its age it should be public domain but of course I can't upload it yet because uploads are disabled at the moment.
Surprisingly, there are quite a few public domain photos of Royal Navy ships on the US Navy history site, I found a couple of the Dreadnoughts there. - Hephaestos 17:33, 3 Jan 2004 (UTC)
Thanks very much. I'm very pleased about that. At the moment i'm writing the HMS Cardiff article. It will probably take me a few hours due to me being easily distracted :-( I'll check the US Navy site out, save a few pictures and then go trawling google. Thanks again :-) SoLando 17:39, 3 Jan 2004 (UTC)
Hi, you've been adding some great RN stuff! (I would do some, but I have no detailed sources :-( - what have you been using?) For the articles that get big, like HMS Colossus, it's useful to break them up by specific ship, a la HMS Warrior or the US Navy ships, that way links from battles and such can go directly to the right ship. Otherwise the reader has the disconcerting experience of clicking on a link in Battle of Jutland and seeing text on an 18th-century SOL - they may not realize that they need to click down. Also it will be quicker downloading when the pictures get added - won't get irrelevant pics. Stan 19:33, 3 Jan 2004 (UTC)
Thanks :-) Ok i'll try and do the one ship one page thing. Have to try and get used to that. Basically i've been using various sources on the net, digesting the info' and then using my own way of writing the article. I'll try and keep adding more RN stuff, hopefully my fingers won't drop off :-) Oh by the way, I was kind of perplexed by the article NAeL Minas Gerais. In this BBC link HMS Vengeance it says that it could be docked at Falmouth. It's dated 21st December 2002 so it quite new. Friends of the Vengeance Campaign kind of contradicts it as well so has anyone got any new info' on HMS Vengeance? SoLando 19:51, 3 Jan 2004 (UTC)
- One of the interesting emergent properties of a bunch of interlinked Wikipedia articles is that mistakes in the source materials start showing up as inconsistencies. I don't know what the answer is in this case, but in several cases I've gotten good info by simply emailing people and asking questions, or asking for their comments on the WP article. Stan 23:02, 3 Jan 2004 (UTC)
Hi SoLando, you said you've lost your image editing CD. There's a freeware program I use for resizing or converting images. It's easy to use and does even allow batch conversions. It's at http://www.irfanview.com/ (It's free for non commercial use, despite being at a .com address). -- JeLuF 20:52, Jan 6, 2004 (UTC)
Thanks. I'll check it out now. That should really help :-) And Stan, i`ll try that and I`ll see if I can trawl the web for more news. SoLando 21:47, 6 Jan 2004 (UTC)
Hello. I liked the article you wrote on the King Edward VII class battleship . It is very informative and compact. The image table was broken, so I fixed it, and reworded the intro a little. Thank for you enlightening me on this important part of naval history. -- Decumanus 02:46, 31 Jan 2004 (UTC)
Amazing your depth of knowledge on military history. The Duke of Wellington's Regiment has been listed on the main page, as Wellington's Regiment, because that's all that could fit. Great work. -- user:zanimum
I'd like to second Stan's appreciation for your work on the RN. I have contributed some articles on that myself, but I don't have sources for quite a lot of the older ships beyond very general knowledge. At the moment, I'm making stub articles, with the standard table for RN ships, if I've written it and if it's necessary, a link to the appropriate MediaWiki message, a link to the MediaWiki stub message, and recently, a standard text hopefully linking to the general article on the ship name.
BTW, I've done a list of RFA ships, which includes similar stub articles, and also includes data on pennant numbers, which can be very difficult to find for RFA ships. There's a site hosted by BT Internet that, whilst not updated for a couple of years, is a fantastic sources on postwar RN and especially RFA ships. There's virtually nothing else like it on the internet for RFA vessels. David Newton 21:08, 25 Feb 2004 (UTC)
Sorry about that delay. You've certainly been a prolific contributor to Wiki, i'm rather slow at it, but nevermind. It's certainly good that people are getting info' on the British armed forces onto Wiki', as a lot of sites that do have information on them are disapearing from the 'net, sadly. So Wiki' really is becoming a good source of information for the British, indeed other nations armed forces, for people wanting to find out about them. Keep up the great work your doing SoLando 06:21, 4 Mar 2004 (UTC)
Hi, SoLando. Thanks for doing these regiment histories. I've created Template:Kings_Regiment_history which can replace the tables on each of the articles. Do you have any objection to using it? Geoff 06:56, 4 Mar 2004 (UTC)
Hi, I've no problems about you replacing the tables. Thanks for doing it. You've been doing fantastic work on WWI articles. Many of them have been a great help when trying to expand battle info' in ship or regimental histories. SoLando 07:09, 4 Mar 2004 (UTC)
- Done and thanks again. I will do the same for your Wellington's Regiment series later. Geoff 07:20, 4 Mar 2004 (UTC)
I've made some changes to the Formidable class battleship article, noting the London subclass. I'm no expert on ships so hopefully I haven't made a mess of it. Geoff 04:29, 8 Mar 2004 (UTC)
Re: HMS Finsterre: it's done. I made it a redirect instead of deleting it, since linking to a ship by its year of launch is also correct. David Newton 02:20, 30 Apr 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Falklands Maps
You asked about the maps for the Falklands Goose Green battle, yes I do plan to make context maps for the other Falklands battles when I find sources that give good locations for the landmarks mentioned. Detailed maps are hard to find, but my shortlist is:
- Battle of Mount Harriet
- Battle of Two Sisters
- Battle of Mount Longdon
- Battle of Wireless Ridge
- Battle of Mount Tumbledown

Heya, I was just browsing through the latest new articles, when I came across your Scots Guards (1805). What a delight to find something so solid and informative, where so often there is nothing but one-line stubs about fictional characters! :-) Keep up the great work!! —Stormie 05:32, Jun 25, 2004 (UTC)
Hi. In your Type 12 article you say the ships were built as an alternative to the much more expensive Type 14. In your Type 14 article you say they were built as an alternative to the much more expensive Type 12. I assume the Type 14 article is correct? Maury 13:21, 26 Jun 2004 (UTC)
Hi. Sorry, it was a typo on the Leander-class article. It was meant to be Type 12, which were known as the Rothesay and Whitby classes. So both articles are quite correct. As the Leander-class were general purpose, while the Rothesay and Whitby's were single-purpose. I'll correct it. SoLando 17:30, 26 Jun 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Article Licensing
Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:
- Multi-Licensing FAQ - Lots of questions answered
- Multi-Licensing Guide
- Free the Rambot Articles Project
To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:
- Option 1
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
OR
- Option 2
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

[edit] New ship table template
I've spent the last few days working on a new ship table template to enable us to centralise the editing of things like weapons outfits for a particular class of ships in one template (so with the Fletchers or Gearings or other big classes you only have to edit in one place to alter a mistake rather than in dozens or hundreds). Please have a look at the WikiProject Ships page's talk section and see what you think. I haven't written the instructions for using it yet, and I want to see whether there are any table cells people would like me to include that aren't present yet. There are two example tables, one with all the optional cells present, and the other with some excluded. David Newton 14:07, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] History of the British Army
Hi Joel, I've started contributing to the First World War section of your History of the British Army. I hope it's OK. Thanks for all the work you've put into it. Geoff/Gsl 07:46, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)
- I've finished my expansion of the First World War section. I feel it's much too long but am having a hard time finding ways to trim it down. I've put coverage of equipment (guns, artillery, tanks, etc.) in a separate Great War section but am not sure that it fits the structure of the article. I'll see if I can help out with the other sections, but the only useful book I have is Chandler & Beckett, so I might not be able to add much. Geoff/Gsl 05:26, 16 Apr 2005 (UTC)
-
- I wasn't sure whether to do a "British Army in World War I" or a "Military history of the United Kingdom during World War I". However, I think there is scope for a British Army-only history to cover things that were important to the army such as changes in command, the formation and disbandment of armies and corps, and so on — stuff that's a bit too detailed for a all-encompassing military history. I'll go ahead and do it shortly and then try and shrink the main article section back to manageable "Organisation" and "Operations" sections. Geoff/Gsl 03:37, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Wassup my dear Joel! Awesome work with the Category! I simply love it, and shame on me for not thinking of it myself. I'm pleased to see the comprhensive work you did on the subject. I cannot think of a better compilation of information. With your great contribution, now all related topics are easy to access. Congratulations on the awesome idea!
I'm starting to think that the FAC is stuck, tho... I cannot seem to be able to resolve the four objections, and unfortunately, no new supports have been offered. With the current 7-4 count, it's doomed to fail right now. I'm beginning to think about ways of making at least a couple of objectors strike their opposals down by agreeing to summarise some parts. Honestly, I don't know what else to do :(
Your support and enthusiasm has enlightened my day. Thank you so much, Joel. Allo me to appoint you honorary Wikipedian Texas Ranger! Have a great day! Shauri smile! 02:55, 16 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Infobox
I've only started using the modular templates recently, but I'd be happy to help you. I'm not terribly familiar with British Army regiments though; do you want to make all of the fields optional, or just some of them? Kirill Lokshin 00:46, 4 November 2005 (UTC)
- All finished! I went ahead and made all the parameters optional, since leaving the last ones in raw table markup seemed to cause some funny errors.
- I doubt this will come up, but just so you're aware: the code I've been writing seems unable, at present, to deal with the insertion of footnotes as template parameters; thus, don't be surprised if you add one and it breaks the box ;-) Kirill Lokshin 03:22, 5 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] DWR
Sorry that was a temporary revert to get a link that was in there but you revrted it back before I could, one one the problems with not knowing who is doing what when? Never mind all has ended as I intended. 86.2.136.115 19:26, 5 November 2005 (UTC)
- One minor point: The new info box headers are well spaced but the info on the right is somewhat squashed up and truncated wrapping text onto the next line in an untidy way. Is it possible to widen the info box or drop the info text below the headings to use up the width more evenly?
- I agree with you that unbordered box's are better. I think the problem may lie in that the box seems split unevenly due to the length of the formal title 'Colonel of The Regiment'. You could try having the titles centred above each section, which would then allow the longer names and post nominals to be presented in a better format, That may also reduce the length of the infobox as well?. 86.2.136.115 23:51, 5 November 2005 (UTC)
- Personally I don't have a problem with that format of title, that is what they are these days, but they do actually control things as opposed to being a figurehead like the Colonel in Chief is. Hold on for a day or two. I will send Sir Evelyn an e-mail and see if he has a problem with it. 86.2.138.120 01:01, 7 November 2005 (UTC)
-
- SoLando; I have received a reply to e-mail from Sir Evelyn, The Title 'Honorary Colonel' would not be correct however it can be shortened to 'Colonel', This would not be confuse with the commanding officer of the Regiment who is known as a 'CO' and a Lieutenant Colonel in rank, Incidentally the current CO of the Duke of Wellington' Regiment is Lieutenant Colonel Phil Lewis MBE. He has also noted in the article on the 8th Duke of Wellington that his Post Nominals include the O.StJ. He has also advised that this refers to 'Officer of St John' which is no longer used by His Grace and has requested it be deleted. 86.2.138.120 00:55, 8 November 2005 (UTC)
-
- Ok, I think that "Colonel" should suffice - and hey, it's short, which matters :-) Right now, I'm now hoping Kiril (see above section ;-)) solves the modular templates inability to handle footnotes, which would provide clarification that "Colonel" in this case doesn't refer to the CO. Ah well. Regarding the Officer of the Order of St John, I have to say that I have (very) limited knowledge of peerage and the like, so I encourage you to edit on that issue. [edit] Crown copyright
I based the template for the Crown copyright on this PDF file:
http://www.museumscopyright.org.uk/crown-a.pdf
It is hosted by an organisation that is specifically devoted to informing museums and archives about copyright term lengths so I thought that it, and its companion PDFs referenced in the British copyright law article that I am largely the author of are reliable. To answer the question that you left on my talk page, then yes unpublished crown copyright photographs from 1954 or earlier are out of copyright.
This comes from the original treatment of all photographs by the Copyright Act 1911. Up until 1995 all photographs had a copyright term based on 50 years. The 1911 Act did not distinguish between published and unpublished photographs so photographs made during the time that Act was in force had a copyright term of 50 years from creation whether published or not. The Copyright Act 1956 did distinguish between published and unpublished photographs, with the former getting the 50 year term and the latter the perpetual copyright of unpublished works. In line with British legal precedent that only applied to photographs made after the commencement of the 1956 Act, ie 30 June 1957. The Copyrights Designs and Patents Act 1988 kept the 50 year term but ended the perpetual copyright protection of unpublished works, with a 50 year transitional period from commencement of the 1988 Act, ie from 1st August 1989 to 1st August 2039. Again it did not alter the status of works made before commencement in line with British legal practice, so photographs taken before 30 June 1957 still kept their 50 year copyright term whether published or unpublished.
All that changed in 1995 when the EU 'harmonized' copyright terms (despite the fact that things like French copyright law not counting the years during WWI and WWII towards the +70 years still exist). That meant that photograph copyright changed to being the same as that of other artistic works, ie life of the author plus 70 years. Importantly, unlike the 1911 Act, 1956 Act and 1988 Act the EU legislation was retrospective. The only class of works that it did not affect were Crown copyright photographs, which remain as they were, ie 50 years from creation for any photograph taken before 30 June 1957.
I can't talk about the specific photograph that you link to because when I clicked on the link it said that the session had expired on the search engine. David Newton 22:50, 10 November 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Image
Hi Joel, I noticed too and was in the process of resolving it. I've seen the photo in Keegan's The Face of Battle (where he reckons it is August-September 1914) and in a 1915 issue of The War Illustrated (where I scanned it from) but in neither of those places was the unit identified. So I posted a question to the Great War forums and the response I had is that they are 4th Battalion, King's Liverpools and that, despite the un-trench like setting, it is 1915. Apparently the photo is featured in King’s Regiment Museum in the Museum of Liverpool Life so there might be more information there.
Certainly your image name is more accurate than mine so mine should be the one deleted. If we wait for more information, it might be possible to come up with a still better name.
I'm not sure which image is better. Mine was scanned from 90-year old newsprint, is lower resolution, and is banded from the lines of text on the other side of the page, but I feel it is slightly sharper in the foreground (though not sharper in the background). They are both cropped slightly differently. Wherever they are eventually placed, I would upload the one that won't be used first, and upload the other over it so that both are in the history. Geoff/Gsl 03:10, 11 November 2005 (UTC)
- Your sharpened image is clearly the best. I think the resolution of the firstworldwar.com image is needlessly high. Perhaps something around 1000 pixels wide is enough (though of course, I would include the full size scan in the image history.)
- If indeed it is the 4th King's, they joined the Sirhind Brigade on 6 March 1915 and the photo was first published in May 1915, so that places the action, if it was in battle, at Neuve Chapelle, or possibly Aubers Ridge. I think a title like "4th_Battalion_Kings_Regiment_1915.jpg" would be good enough unless you want to wait to gather more information. Feel free to upload over my Commons photo until such time was we decide on a name. Then you or I can move the Commons:Image:British infantry skirmish 1914.jpg history to the new name. [edit] Admin
Hi Joel, I've got a quick query. You've been around here for ages, and you do the anti-vandalism stuff, is there a reason that you've not gone for Adminship? It's something I've been puzzling over, and haven't made up my mind on, so I was curious what your thoughts were. Leithp (talk) 21:13, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
- Well, as you may have guessed, the above was also a thinly veiled query as to whether you want me to nominate you. I have now done so, so do you want to accept it? I won't be offended if you turn it down or if you want someone else to nominate you, as I'm aware my name doesn't carry as much clout as someone else's might. Let me know what you think. Leithp (talk) 13:06, 6 December 2005 (UTC)
Your RFA will soon be over, have you prepared your plans for mass vandalism of Wikipedia? ;-) Leithp (talk) 11:12, 13 December 2005 (UTC)
- Before you use your super-powers for evil, can you wing over to One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and unprotect it? I've created Category:Films directed by Miloš Forman and now can't put Forman's most famous film in it because somebody has protected the page and then forgotten about it. I think it's been locked since September. Leithp (talk) 13:07, 13 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] BD2412's RFA
Although my RfA is not over yet, I figured that since so many people voted before it had been posted, I may as well start thanking people before it wraps up. [edit] Congratulations!
Congratulations! It's my pleasure to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. You might find the new administrators' how-to guide helpful. Cheers! -- Cecropia 04:28, 14 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Bad day
Is it just me, or is the atmosphere in this place getting more poisonous every day? I've just had another run in with WP:AFD, after promising myself never to darken its doors again, after undeleting an article. I just don't understand the Delete nn mentality. If someone has put time into writing a perfectly decent article on a borderline subject, why do people clamour to delete it? Leithp 16:04, 28 January 2006 (UTC)
- Because, sadly, there are sections that would readily purge 80% of Wikipedia and retain a very, very narrow field of topics :-( Tis a fearful prospect. Focusing on the Spanish Gothic Fairy always makes this fine Wikipedia better :-) SoLando (Talk) 16:34, 28 January 2006 (UTC)
- A victory for common sense. Now all I need to do is go through the hundreds of outstanding borderline AFDs to find verifiability for all of them. Or not.... Leithp 17:08, 28 January 2006 (UTC)
- That it is. Delving into the AFD minefield to rescue worthy articles is damned brave :-) Now don't forget to inform me of such articles, ya hear! I'm off to resume sado-masochism now. *sigh* SoLando (Talk) 17:16, 28 January 2006 (UTC)
- Indeed, youre a bolder man than Iam Gunga Leithp;> And you're dead on right about this, new poisionous climate. I took the opportunity to comment on it over on my Rfa at the bottom of the page. I've recently been involved in some battles to try and preserve images of historical value/interest. Perhaps we should pool our efforts and create some type of organization or project, to defend worthy content from overzealous deletionists. After all, we are supposed to be BUILDING a Pedia, not dismantaling one!--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 05:09, 31 January 2006 (UTC)
-
- Like I said, the Spanish Gothic Fairy soothes one's fears about a dark change in Wikipedia's atmosphere. I agree that something needs to be done to check this wanton deletionism; if it's a competent article, it should stay, regardless of how.....curious.....the topic is, and assuming it isn't WP:VANITY and the like. Maybe if we all collectively focus our qi....ahem....we can channel happiness and positivity into this awesome place, as a Spanish Wiki-Lady once did? SoLando (Talk) 05:34, 31 January 2006 (UTC)
- I don't know what we can do, other than keep an eye out on all our watchlists. But something like 70% of articles are unwatched (see Special:Unwatchedpages) so it's something of a lost cause. AFD is far too large to keep an eye on, and I stopped once I found that it was dragging me down into a mire of bad-faith. The deletion reform can't come soon enough. I just hope that the deletionist tendency doesn't have its way and that the work-in-progress articles will be allowed to continue. I like an idea that Kirill had on the mailing list of assigning deletion to the projects, it means that you've more chance of getting informed comment. Leithp 08:37, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

- Lost causes are a forte of mine ;-) Until deletion reform arrives (and I have to admit, I'm quite cynical about how positive an impact it will have), frequent NP patrols can save many otherwise unfortunate articles :-) Kirill's proposal seems really interesting.....decentralistion is imperative, in my opinion. The whole AFD structure just seems to be so cumbersome.....I can almost see the tub of lard and a 10 ton ball and chain! Ah well. On to something more upbeat. How goes your Brian Horrocks article? Will you be making the article a guiding star for others soon? SoLando (Talk) 19:12, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

- Ah, my Horrocks project seems to have pretty much stalled. I need to add an awful lot of content about Market Garden, which I have a very sketchy knowledge of and some stuff about his time in Russia. My stuff about Russia is a series of anecdotes which I've no idea how to put into a coherent form. The whole article reads like a work in progress and I think needs serious copyediting as well as a lot more work before I can put it forward for peer review or as a FAC. - (Still chortling at the image of a tub o lard and 10 ton ball which is AFD:). A very good idea over on m:Association of Inclusionist Wikipedians is to have a Wiki(pedia) Recycle Bin, where threatened or deleted articles can get a second chance. Proof further that if you have a good idea, chances are someone has already thought of it. We need to support it...or if it does'nt take off and we cant find/come up with a better one, nick it and claim it for our own :>
-
- One of the things I like about my M8, O'Connor is, he was a very prolific writer of letters, memos, orders, suggestions...you name it. Everything but his memoirs. Horrocks, on the other hand, wrote a very good autobiography, but did'nt seem to leave as much of a paper trail otherwise. This makes him a lot more friendly to the casual reader but a formidable foe for the serious researcher (hello:). Now that I have gotten reinforcements for La Grande Armee, I might be able to shift some forces your way to help out with Market Garden and on the Maruth line. These are his two main battles, and where the main effort should be concentrated.--R.D.H. (Ghost In The Machine) 06:31, 1 February 2006 (UTC)
-
-
- The autobiography is a very well written and interesting book, but it was written twenty years after the events. The two biographys I have basically use it as their only source, apparently because Horrocks' memory had become faulty and he'd destroyed all his notes when moving house (why would you do that?!?). By re-telling the stories so many times he couldn't remember the events any more, just the anecdotes. He co-wrote a book called "Corps Commander", which goes into more detail about Market Garden. I'm planning to use this to expand the section, but it retreads a lot of the ground of the autobiography. Having said all this, the main reason it hasn't been expanded is that I'm too lazy to do it.
-
-
-
- On a different subject, can either of you two go over and take a look at Arthur Ernest Percival? Nickhk has totally re-written it (it was an embarassment before) and it looks extremely comprehensive to me. It might be a good FAC. Leithp 08:48, 1 February 2006 (UTC)
-
-
-
-
- Never let the Horrock's article stall! Stalling leads to the dark side - of sloth, boredom, and Cliff Richard, it does! ;-) Leithp, count yourself lucky that you have so many anecdotes. I wouldn't mind having some for the King's Regiment :-( I'd like to help somehow with the article (I'll even do my utmost to ensure any additions aren't identifiable as being my grammar ;-)). The Percival article looks really good.....that photo of him with the Japanese commanders....why am I suddenly thinking of Lord Percy Percy? I'd prefer if there was more detail on his early life in WWI, and the intro' should be expanded. Also, Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel of the Cheshire Regiment in 1959? What the hell!? Was it an honory position, or did he actually command a battalion? That does need clarifying. And perhaps some mention should be made of Brig. Alfred James MacGregor Percival, assuming he's a relative. SoLando (Talk) 17:06, 1 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Template:Infobox Military Unit
Since you probably have the most experience with this, I thought you might be able to give me some advice: what changes or enhancements (besides the support for British spelling—I'm still trying to figure out how best to do that) would be needed to allow this to be used as a replacement for Infobox British Army regiment? —Kirill Lokshin 02:05, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
- I'm honoured :-) Well, I believe that there is really only one major field omitted from Infobox Military Unit: "Colonel of the Regiment", informally known as "Honorary Colonel" (or though that is, apparently, inaccurate, but meh!). An "Alliances" parameter might be useful, though one regiment can hold many alliances (see Royal Anglian Regiment for an example), but that can be circumvented by creating a section in the article. Maybe a Freedom(s) (of the city) field? Other than that, I believe that the transition from Infobox:British Army regiment to Infobox Military Unit would be seamless :-) SoLando (Talk) 02:31, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
-
- Excellent! Would there be any problem with using the "Ceremonial chief" parameter for the "Colonel of the Regiment" and just adding a way to change the label on the field? —Kirill Lokshin 02:35, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
-
-
- The "Ceremonial chief" parameter would be better retained for "Colonel-in-Chief", a position usually reserved for a member of the royal family. The "Colonel of the Regiment" position is usually held by former serving officers affiliated with the regiment in question. Sorry for the confusion! SoLando (Talk) 02:41, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

- No problem ;-) Take a look at Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Military unit infobox; Colonel of the regiment and an optional override to the "Colors" label has been added. Would you happen to know of a good alternate term for "Specialization" that doesn't have different spellings, by the way? —Kirill Lokshin 03:02, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

If you get a chance would you mind having another look - Ive just nominated the article for WP:FAC, having tried to address your comments?
[edit] Oops!
I've just updated the info box on the Duke of Wellington's Regiment page with the Current Commanding officer and posting location. I also went to change the info title Ceremonial Colonel to Colonel in Chief, which is the official title, as Ceremonial Colonel is considered derogatory, those who hold the position are invariably ex serving officers with an official rank, Usually Brigadiers or Generals. Mind you it's not too important here as the Dukes are being merged with others on the 6th of June and the Colonel in Chief and Colonel of the Regiments positions will become redundant. However I must have done something wrong as now the position does not show at all! Sorry!! but could you take a look and correct my error?
- Thanks for the additions! Yes, as there is no "Colonel in Chief" parameter in the Template:Infobox Military Unit's syntax, changing "Ceremonial chief" will result in the field being omitted in an article's infobox. I think I'll go and request a "Colonel-in-Chief" field. Thanks again! SoLando (Talk) 16:44, 13 February 2006 (UTC)

- No need to create extra work for someone! I've worked out how to edit the field title and changed it. Ta

...to a Scouser of Polish origin in Liverpool from a Scouser of Bosnian origin in Vienna. One never knows how small the world is! nepTune 18:26, 3 March 2006 (UTC)
- Hi! Yes, it is. Though I have to admit, I wished the world was a tad smaller - it would help me travel more if tickets were cheaper! ;-) SoLando (Talk) 19:50, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

- Well, mind you, I wouldn't mind taking a fellow Scouser down to Bosnia, just in case... nepTune 13:18, 7 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Page move request
Hi Joel, I was hoping you could use your admin powers and do me a favour. I have tried to get a bad page move corrected through normal channels (Requested moves) without any success. First day on the Somme was moved to Battle of Albert (1914) and then cut-and-pasted back so that it can't be restored. Would you be able to fix it? Delete the current first day on the Somme (history) and move the current Battle of Albert (1914) back to first day on the Somme then revert it to a correct version prior to the move (25 February or thereabouts)? Geoff/Gsl 08:47, 8 March 2006 (UTC)
- Sorry about the late reply - I knew I should have stayed awake! ;-) Ok, I've done it. Would you like me to restore the Battle of Albert (1914) article too, even though it was created in mistake? SoLando (Talk) 16:56, 8 March 2006 (UTC)
-
- Many thanks. I've put the stub content back on Battle of Albert (1914) and will expand it if I ever get the time. Geoff/Gsl 20:40, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

- As an administrator, I could do that myself ;-) Hmmm, I'm going to err on the side of caution and opt to delete it. SoLando (Talk) 05:56, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] King's Regiment
I noticed your userpage links to them, so I thought you might like to know I've created stubs for the 40th (The King's) Royal Tank Regiment and 46th (Liverpool Welsh) Royal Tank Regiment. Not that they actually say much, but... Shimgray | talk | 22:21, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
- Awesome! I'll go ahead and start adding links in relevant articles. I feel compelled to say thanks, so thank you! :-) SoLando (Talk) 22:59, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

Welcome to the inaugural issue of the Military history WikiProject's newsletter! We hope that this new format will help members—especially those who may be unable to keep up with some of the rapid developments that tend to occur—find new groups and programs within the project that they may wish to participate in. Please consider this inital issue to be a prototype; as always, any comments and suggestions are quite welcome, and will help us improve the newsletter in the coming months. [edit] Articles you might like to edit, from SuggestBot
SuggestBot predicts that you will enjoy editing some of these articles. Have fun!
SuggestBot picks articles in a number of ways based on other articles you've edited, including straight text similarity, following wikilinks, and matching your editing patterns against those of other Wikipedians. It tries to recommend only articles that other Wikipedians have marked as needing work. Your contributions make Wikipedia better -- thanks for helping.
If you have feedback on how to make SuggestBot better, please tell me on SuggestBot's talk page. Thanks from ForteTuba, SuggestBot's caretaker.
P.S. You received these suggestions because your name was listed on the SuggestBot request page. If this was in error, sorry about the confusion. -- SuggestBot 04:59, 31 March 2006 (UTC)
- Wow, these are excellent suggesstions! I have a sudden, new-found appreciation for bots! But Backdraft? Why didn't it just select Mary Poppins?! ;-) SoLando (Talk) 15:10, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Mercia Rifles
Do you know about this "Mercia Rifles" regiment that keeps appearing on the Structure of the British Army article? I can't find any mention of it anywhere using Google. Hammersfan 05/05/06, 16.15 BST
- No, I've never heatd of the "Mercia Rifles". These ips have also added this "unit" to British Army Infantry and List of British Army regiments (1994)/2008. I've reverted such edits, as I believe them them to be spurious. Perhaps the culprit is an irate soldier? ;-) SoLando (Talk) 19:41, 5 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Club RSX
Thanks for sprotecting Club RSX. It was turning into a lot of work keeping this one (relatively) clean of vandalism. Best, Gwernol 05:35, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] hotlink question for you
What do you do to make the person's IP address clickable with also a talk link in brackets afterwards too? Put one bracket, two brackets, special brackets? See here. Or is it customary to copy the whole link manually like I just did now?
- To generates a User + talk (and contribs) automatically, just include User| before the name, eg SoLando (talk • contribs). If you wish to sign your name with a timestamp, use four tides ~~~~ , which generates SoLando 13:03, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
- In an edit summary, you don't need to adhere to such formalities, just simplify it to "rv vandalism" or "rv vandal ip", etc. As an admin, I have rollback, which automatically generates a link to the reverted user. There are similar tools available for non-admins; check out Wikipedia: Vandalism and the Wikipedia:Counter Vandalism Unit. Hope that helps. Happy editing! SoLando (Talk) 13:03, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
-
- I loathe code, but you might prefer that as an alternative. See Wikipedia:Sign your posts on talk pages. SoLando (Talk) 13:15, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
Hi! I'm Federica...I've seen this notice in your like in other user page:This user is a recent changes patroller...but what does it means exactly? bye see u soon fedina
- A recent changes patroller refers to those who scour recent changes (which allows you to see the most recents edits) for users committing vandalism on Wikipedia. The project apppreciates any help in these efforts, so if you'd like more information, pertinent pages are available at Wikipedia:Vandalism and Wikipedia:Counter Vandalism Unit, Happy editing! [edit] i fear the fact that you are ignorant has clouded your judgment
sorry that youve felt the need to delete my comment on the utterly ridiculous merging of continental system and blockade, and that youve deleted my perfectly accurate alteration to the article.
I'm interested to know on what basis youve decided to delete it, other than you have some supercool vandalize finding programme. Unless you have somthign to add on the matter thats more constructive than the ape like grunting noises im sure you usually communicate with, replace my contribution. If there is a problem with format or spelling, feel freee to edit.#
I dont have tmie to write a long piece as im busy, but its better than the limited half truth that is there. For more info on my poiont i suggest you read eli heckscher's continental system and ellis's case stufy of alsace under the system, then i have some more for you. Its an interesting subject but what is wriitn a tthe mooment is common misconception, not knowledge as t should be
- Your edits to Continental System entailed the removal of significant amounts of text, including the lead intro. If you do not wish to be reverted by those patrolling against vandalism, be more careful! Before deciding to remove large chunks of text as an anon, discuss such changes on the talk page. That is why you were reverted. In regard to the talk page comment on World War I, I do apologise. SoLando (Talk) 15:37, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
