Solar Energy Generating Systems

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Solar Energy Generating Systems (SEGS) operates nine solar power plants which use parabolic trough solar thermal electric technology along with natural gas to generate electricity in the Mojave Desert. The plants produce 354 MW, making it the largest solar plant of any kind in the world.[1] By comparison, the largest photovoltaic (solar panel) plant produces only 12 MW.

SEGS is owned and operated by FPL Energy.

The facility has a total of 400,000 mirrors and takes up 1,000 acres (4 kmĀ²).

SEGS VIII and SEGS IX are the largest solar power plants individually and collectively in the world.

The SEGS power plants have been constructed from 1986-2005 and have incorporated slight design improvements and experimental technologies.
