Sohar
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sohar (Arabic: صحار) is a city located in the Al Batinah Region of the Sultanate of Oman, 240 kilometers north-west of the capital Muscat.
Sohar was an ancient capital of Oman. Many believe Sohar to be the birthplace of Sindbad the Sailor. Sohar is traditionally a fishing town and has a fish souk.
The town is close to ancient copper mines and Jebel Akhdar (the Green Mountain), the tallest mountain in Oman. It is also fairly close to the fort-towns of Ibri, Nakhl, Rustaq and Nizwa.
The Sohar Industrial Port Company (SIPC) operates the Sohar port, which was established in 2002 and is located east of the Strait of Hormuz. The Port of Sohar is not a free trade zone, unlike the Jebel ali free zone in the United Arab Emirates, located about 250 kilometers north-west of Sohar.
