"Soft and Wet" was Prince's first single released from his debut album, For You. The 1978 track was Prince's first experiment with using sexually charged lyrics, which were co-written by Chris Moon. The opening lyrics "Hey lover, I've got a sugarcane/that I wanna lose in you, baby can you stand the pain" started a long-running career of sexual metaphors in Prince's music, titilating audiences all the while. The track is in the funk-disco vein, being comprised of drums, bass guitar and synthesizers. An energetic keyboard solo displays Prince's significant skills at a relatively early age. The song was the highlight of For You and the only successful single from the album. The B-side of the single was the album track, "Crazy You".
[edit] Miscellanea
- MC Hammer recorded a song similar to this on his 1990 album Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em called "She's Soft and Wet". The song used a similar bassline and beat which were the only major similarities between Prince's song and MC Hammer's besides the title. The lyrics were totally different from the original Prince tune. So, it is considered a sampled work by many.
- "Soft and Wet" was later released as a B-side to Prince's "Pink Cashmere" single in 1993.
