Social Media Optimization

Social Media Optimization (SMO) is a way to optimize websites so they would be more easily connected or interlaced with online communities and community websites. For example allowing RSS feeds, easier linking, incorporation of third party community functionalities like Flickr photo slides and galleries or YouTube videos.

Rohit Bhargava is generally credited with bringing the term SMO to more acceptance among online marketers with his "5 Rules of Social Media Optimization (SMO)", which has been subsequently expanded to 16 rules (as contributed by other marketing experts). The original 5 rules are as follows:
- Increase your linkability
- Make tagging and bookmarking easy
- Reward inbound links
- Help your content travel
- Encourage the mashup
