Soazkhwani is a vocal art or religious reciting to commemorate the martyrdom of Muhammad’s grandson in the Islamic month of Muharram and Safar by Shiite Muslims around the world. It is basically the art of reciting the same poetry either in parts or in its entirety.
Recently, researches made by Indian and Pakistani scholars improved Soazkhwani. Reciting poetry has been categorized under the names of Ruba'ee, Qat'aa, Soaz, Salam and Marsiya. Professor Syed Sibte Jafar Zaidi helped to structure and value Soazkhwani. He conducted work in composing, reciting and publishing the poetry for Shiite Muslims especially for the Urdu and Hindi speaking communities.
Marsiya-Khwani and Soazkhwani although related to each other in a sense of using almost the same kind of poetry are nonetheless different. Marsiya is actually the particular kind of poetry in which six phrases are used in the technical form of a a a a b b.
Bastah is a term for a book or catalogue on which soazkhwans keep their reciting material which is mostly poetry.
