"So Under Pressure" is a popdance song written by Australian singer Dannii Minogue, Terry Ronald and LMC for Minogue's greatest hits compilation The Hits & Beyond (2006). The song was produced by Lee Monteverde for LMC Productions and received a mixed reception from music critics. It was released as the first single in the second quarter of 2006 and reached the top twenty in the United Kingdom, where it became Minogue's fourteenth top twenty single. The single sold less than 10,000 copies in the UK and only reached the Top 20 due to EMI deciding to delete the physical single of the Gnarls Barklay smash-hit Crazy meaning it was excluded from the Top 20 despite having sold over 15,000 copies that week. It just missed the top thirty in [[Ireland], entering at #31 but dropping out of the charts completely in the following week. In the UK, "So Under Pressure" was also released to success on the dance charts, where it reached the top position on the Upfront Club Chart and the Commercial Pop Club Chart.

The lyrics to the song, written by Minogue, were inspired by recent personal situations including the recent cancer diagnoses of sister Kylie Minogue and an un-named friend. Musically, "So Under Pressure" is unlike her previous efforts as it moves away from her Eurocentric sound of past releases in favour of a Giorgio Moroder inspired electronica sound.

[edit] Music video

"So Under Pressure" features a music video directed by Phil Griffin and was filmed in London, England. It explores a range of high pressure motifs, including Minogue being subjected to a slithering white python and encased in a perspex cabinet full of insects. It also features Minogue dressed in 1980s styled fashions amid monochramatic and polychromatic backgrounds. At times the video recalls Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love" music video from 1986.

While the white python featured in the video was added to help display high pressure moments, it gave Minogue and her production crew a scare during filimg as it began to wrap itself around her waist, limiting her breathing. At first the crew thought Minogue was trying to act more seductive as she called for help, but then realized she was having a hard time breathing. The video was released to music channels in the UK in April and peaked at number eight on the British TV Airplay chart.

[edit] Chart performance

On June 12, 2006, "So Under Pressure" was released in the United Kingdom. The song became Minogue's fourteenth top twenty single when it debuted at number twenty on the singles chart, and spent a total of two weeks in the top seventy-five. The song first appeared on the singles chart the week before its physical released at number hundred and fifteen, backed only by its digital release sales. "So Under Pressure" became Minogue's tenth consecutive release to reach the top of the UK Upfront Club Chart, where it remained for one week. It also reached number one on the Commercial Pop Club Chart and number eleven on the Dance Chart.

Outside of the UK, the song had little impact and to date remains unreleased in most of mainland Europe. In Ireland, it debuted at number thirty-one on the singles chart, and exited the chart the following week. Like in the UK, "So Under Pressure" was successful on the Irish Dance Charts and reached number six. In Wales the song became a top twenty hit, peaking at number thirteen.

When "So Under Pressure" debuted at #16 in its first week on the Australian singles chart, it became her first single to chart higher in Australia than in the UK since her debut single "Love and Kisses".
