Snowskating is riding on a flat skate deck on snow. Sometimes snowskates are attached to a ski and are called a "bideck" or "bilevel" snowskate. Snowskating combines the elements of snowboarding and skateboarding to create a new experience which is most closely described as skateboarding on snow, or Snowskating.

The snowskate, according to skisk8.com, was first invented at a bonfire party at Stevens Pass, Wa. when Steve Frink took an old skateboard deck and combined it with a broken ski, creating the bideck snowskate. Later on, Burton would imitate the bideck model and bring dual deck snowskates to the masses. Premier Snowskates created a plastic, single deck model near the same time. Today the single deck snowskate is generally more widespread for tricks. The single deck type is made out of wood with a p-tex base or plastic with rubber foam for grip on the top. The bideck consists of a skateboard deck mounted by special trucks to a mini snowboard or ski. Bidecks generally have more control for riding but require more balance for tricks. Single decks have little direction control but, due to construction, are capable of many tricks.
Copper Mountain Resort in Summit County Colorado had the first World Invitational, which Matt Quam won, landing several difficult tricks including a frontside boardslide to shovit.

More and more companies have joined this sport including Premier, Criteria, Narmerton Inc., Vans Shoes, Burton, Transworld, World Industries, Ambition snowskate and Clothing, Switchfilms, Bideck, Gnu, Varient3, Skisk8, akwd, Rossignol and more. Switchfilms, the first independent snowskate film company has put out 3 full length snowskate DVD films with their latest being Adieu Back in the old days they would snowskate on a wooden plank called "wangstick."
