Snow Lake, Manitoba

Snow Lake is a mining town in north-central Manitoba. The population in 2006 was approximately 730. The main industry is mining, and there is currently one mine producing Copper and Zinc. The community was founded in 1947 and officially became a town in 1976.

[edit] Mining
Mining is Snow Lake's major industry. Two seperate mining ventures have operated in the community over the past 40 years. TVX/Kinross/High River operated the New Britannia Mine, which closed in January of 2005, and HudBay Minerals, which operated 11 area mines. They were/are Chisel Lake, Stall Lake, Osborne Lake, Dickstone, Anderson Lake, Ghost Lake, Lost Lake, Spruce Point, Rod Mine, Photo Lake, and Chisel North.
In recent years the New Britannia Mine employed the majority of the town's population; however, it's closure caused a sudden drop in population. HudBay Mining and Smelting is now the community's major employer and have recently announced that they will be developing a new copper property, the Bur Zone.

The Town of Snow Lake is truly is an outdoor-lovers paradise.
Nature lovers will delight in the numerous species of birds, animals and vegatation found along the regions many area's hiking trails. Picking strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, cranberries or gooseberries are also a favourite summer past time.
History enthuisiasts can explore ancient Aboriginal Pictographs that are approximately 1500 years old.
Canoeing the Grass River Route will provide outdoor enthusiats with an insight into the life of the early voyageurs and fur traders. The river and nearby Snow Lake also provide many opportunities for spectacular fishing.
In the winter months, local hiking paths double as cross-country ski trails. Miles of frozen lakes and rivers in the area provide endless trails for snowmobile enthusiasts.
The Town of Snow Lake also is home to a hockey arena, curling rink, golf course and several other recreational facilities.
Visitors to the north cannot miss the north's beautiful sunsets. Silhouetted in the evening light, loons grace the quiet evening with their soulful calls on the waters around Snow Lake. The experience of the northern sunset is an experience few visitors ever forget.

Snow Lake has one school. J.H. Kerr School is a Kindergarten to Senior Four facility with an enrollment of 207 students for the 2005-2006 school year. It is part of the Frontier School Division and has been open for close to 50 years.
In 1998 and 1999 the school developed and implemented the Challenge 2000 Program. This program consists of a number of units at each grade level which have integrated all subject areas under themes of study such as: Technology for the Future, Water Systems, Global Connections, and Engineering for the Future. These themes cover the majority of the mandated provincial curriculum content for each grade level and are taught in 1/2 day blocks in each classroom. The purpose of the program is to allow teachers and students the time and flexiblily to study topics in some depth, to allow for higher order thinking and to integrate IT into their curricula. In 2001, Joseph H. Kerr was named one of the 30 most innovative schools by Canada's Schoolnet.
The school's mission is to prepare their students, academically, socially, and "skill wise," for the world they will have to live and work in in the twenty-first century. Their classes are small, their expectations are high, and they do all they can to help their students succeed.
