Snipe has number of meanings:
- The snipe, several species of wading bird
- In the motion picture exhibition, a snipe in film may refer to a short announouncement trailer on behalf of the theater, or any film that's run before or after a feature that isn't a promotional trailer or commercial (eg. a "welcome to our theater" snipe). A snipe may also refer to a last minute print which is glued over a poster or any paper advertising material to either alter or add to the information.
- The object of a snipe hunt, which is a practical joke in which a victim is told they are going to hunt snipe (the birds) in an area where they are guaranteed not to be, and are then left there forever
- A term used to describe a person of low character (although this is more commonly known as a guttersnipe)
- Shooting a weapon at someone while hiding (what a sniper does)
- A verb used to describe a short verbal assault on someone ('The aggravating wife sniped at her husband all day long, henpecking him into submission')
- The Snipe class of racing sailboat
- A First World War bi-plane fighter known as the Sopwith Snipe
- A number of automobiles made by Humber as the Snipe or the Super Snipe from (at least) 1930 to 1963
- Auction Sniping: Bidding for an item in the last few seconds of an online auction such as on eBay. (Probably derived from military sniper, as a bidder "lurks" and at the last moment "fires" off a bid).
- Also used as a means of describing people who pick at people with "sly" comments.
- In woodworking, snipe refers to a deeper cut on a short section of a board at either end while using a jointer or thicknesser (planer).
- In the US Navy, slang for someone in the engineering field, especially those who work on the ship's propulsion plants.
- In television advertising, the animated graphics that promote other shows while the viewer is watching the current show.
