[edit] LaVergne Rivalry
Since the school split,LaVergne and Smyrna have held an intense football rivalry, often vandalizing each other's football fields. But Smyrna's football team has only lost once to LaVergne's football team in almost 20 years against them.
[edit] Riverdale Rivalry
Riverdale High's football team and Smyrna's football team have held a rivalry for 18 years. Riverdale beat Smyrna in their first 17 meetings; however, Smyrna finally beat the Warriors for the first time in the Class 5A state championship quarterfinals in 2006.
[edit] Historic State Championship Run
The Bulldogs entered the playoffs 7-2. They had won all of their games on the road and were contenders to go far into the playoffs. They wiped Coffee County out of the playoffs in the first round by beating them 47-21 at Robert L. Raikes Stadium. The next week, LaVergne once again faced Smyrna but the result remained the same as Smyrna once again beat the Wolverines 24-0. On November 17, 2006, the Bulldogs finally beat the Riverdale Warriors of Murfreesboro for the first time in 18 years by a score of 9-7 to advance to the Semi-Finals game. That game is best remembered for coach Philip Shadowens' famous two line pregame speech "I Believe". The phrase has since caught fire across the town of Smyrna and was the rally cry of their fans. On November 24th, 2006, the Bulldogs advanced to their first State Finals game ever by beating the undefeated Ootlewah Owls of [Chattanooga, Tennessee|Chattanooga] in the Semi-Finals game by a score of 28-25. The win gave Coach Shadowens his 100th career win as Smyrna High's head coach. On December 2nd, 2006, the Smyrna Bulldogs defeated the Ravenwood Raptors[[Brentwood, Tennessee|Brentwood) to avenge their only other loss of the year, to win their first State Championship in school history by a score of 35-14. The first half was exciting but the Bulldogs pulled the game away in the 4th quarter scoring 29 unanswered points. They are now the defending State Champions heading into the offseason.
[edit] Bowling Team
The bowling team is currently the two-time defending State Champions for 2005 and 2006. They set and broke their own combined points record in both. They currently hold the state record with over 4000 points total.
[edit] Swim Team
The Smyrna High Swim Team is currently the three-time defending County Champions, in 2004, 2005, and 2006, respectively. The Swim Team's success is due to the vigorous amounts of practice.
[edit] Wrestling Team
The Smyrna High Wrestling has a new head wrestling coach. The new head coach's name is Chris Garner. Last year's head coach was Mark Gonyea. He was a very good coach. The SHS Wrestling team won many trophy's while he coached, and I'm sure everyone agree's that he is the best coach the wrestling team has had so far. Chris Garner used to coach Smyrna Middle for 3 years. The wrestling team practices are around 3:35pm to 7:00pm Monday through Friday. And a reminder that it is a "closed" practice. During these times you may not enter the cafeteria.
