[edit] History
Since the 1890s the Strandfaraskip Landsins have produced five different ships named Smyril: Smyril I, Smyril II, Smyril III, Smyril IV and mostly recently in 2005 Smyril V. Smyril is the Faroese word for merlin.
[edit] Smyril I
Smyril I was built in the 1890s and began as a smaller transport boat in Tvøroyri in the Faroe islands.
[edit] Smyril II
[edit] Smyril III
[edit] Smyril IV
Smyril IV was built in the early 1980s and ran though to 2004. It began to show signs of wear against the strong Faroese elements in the mid 1990s and by 2003 it was facing extreme difficulties in sailing through the strong currents of the islands. It was eventually replaced and taken out of operation in October 2005 with Smyril V.
[edit] Smyril V
Smyril V was brought into operation from the 15th October 2005. It was built in San Fernando, Spain, at the IZAR shipyard.
