[edit] Photosynthesis
Some time ago you helped improve the article Photosynthetic reaction centre to bring it to featured article standard. The article never became featured, probably because it's too obscure, so now I want to merge it with photosynthesis and then eventually rewrite that whole article. Few people have heard of reaction centres, but the majority of people have heard of photosynthesis, so this is probably a better candidate for a featured article. I just wondered if you would like to help merge the two articles appropriately. Thanks. --Miller 17:05, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Your RFA
I don't like the {{RfA-nom}} template; anyone experienced enough to be an administrator ought to know how the process works. So I'm just going to give you the link to your nomination and let you do your thing. It's at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Smurrayinchester2. Good luck! --TantalumTelluride 23:03, 11 March 2006 (UTC)
I formatted my user page to resemble yours due to the organization and attractiveness of your page.
If you would like me to change my page, I am more than willing to.
Thank you for the inspiration in design.

[edit] New User Page! Again! (*late response*)
Hey, Smurrayinchester, nice user/talk/quote page. You really do seem to have a knack for creating original and catchy userpage designs. <Not meant sarcastically, by the way. :)> Anyway, I'm back from Wikibreak and I didn't know who to tell. Hehe ;). See you around! Igor the Lion(Roar!) 23:50, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
P.S. Incidentally, what's your name? So I don't have to type SMURRAYINCHESTRER every time I write you. Hehe :) Not that you have to give it if you're, um,... secretive about it. It's just, you know, like - ach! You get the point.
- By the way, you can put your sig in your userspace (ex. [[User:Smurrayinchester/sig]]) and instead of typing all those lines of text into the signature box in Preferences, you need only input {{User:Smurrayincheter/sig}} e voila! No more four lines of code that eat up space in text boxes. Igor the Lion(Roar!) 23:56, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
-
- Oh my, Wikipedia never stays the same, does it? You're right about the sig - didn't notice that. Though it is quite cumbersome to view or scroll down four lines of code. After all the fuss they made last year about long sigs, you'd think they'd have thought up new ways to shorten them. Oh well. Gotta move on. :) Igor the Lion(Roar!) 13:20, 13 March 2006 (UTC)
Must... fight... intertia. 'I hope that it's not discouraging to see your little seed of a DFA nomination just lying there, unloved. There appears to be some underlying level of opposition that I hadn't counted on in light of how minor an item it is. I'd still like to see you put through the wringer on this, so if you're keen and your nominator's didn't mind, getting them to contribute (or copy/paste even) would be great. I'm going to continue trying to see this get a decent try-out rather than seeing it simply wither on the vine. - brenneman{T}{L} 03:47, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Upawinner
I see you've been modifying Upawinner to get it so that a user's real name appears on their talk page and not just {{PAGENAME}}. I just thought I'd add a couple of comments:
1) I got told off by KoS for doing that :-(
2) If you have a look at Help:Template, you can actually do what I guess you were intending to do pretty simply:
- If you put {{<includeonly>subst:</includeonly>PAGENAME}} into a template, it will appear as
- {{PAGENAME}} on the template page,
- {{subst:PAGENAME}} when included in another page, and
- as the actual page's name (for example, Smurrayinchester/Archive 4) when the template is substed, which it should be on a user talk page.
Just a thought; the code you put into the template looked quite complicated! haz (user talk)e 20:52, 14 March 2006
- I'll have a look at your CSS tomorrow (tired...yawn!) haz (user talk)e 21:59, 14 March 2006
[edit] User page... AGAIN
Hi, markup guru! ;)
I've got another problem, which has been bugging me for some time, but up to now, it was not so immediate; now, it is. The navigation thingummy at the top of my pages doesn't seem to want to let itself be centered, no matter what I do. Could you help me with that?
Thanks a lot! —Nightstallion (?) 08:12, 15 March 2006 (UTC)
- I'm short of time, so I've fixed the box on some of your subpages, but on the others, just "align=center" to the line of code that controls the white box around the contents ("<table cellspacing="4" cellpadding="2" ''add the "align=center" here'' style="background: cornflowerblue; position: relative; float: center; align: center">"). That should fix it. smurrayinchester(User), (Talk) 08:23, 15 March 2006 (UTC)
-
- Thanks a lot for the speedy fix! I thought it was something along the lines of align and center, but... ah, never mind. Thanks! —Nightstallion (?) 08:23, 15 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] CSS, Java, etc.
Hey, I'm in the middle of creating a bot and designing its userpage. To keep with the theme, I'd like to change around the heading CSS and possibly add a form box to my talk page, so that comments get added in a unique way. Are either of these possible? - ElAmericano (dímelo) 19:05, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
- The problem I'm having is that—because my talk bg is semi-transparent black—I can't see any headings (h2, h3, etc.). Also, I'd like to get rid of the line below them and make the font about equal with the text font. As to the form box, what I had in mind is that the user enters his comment there (like he was "cat"ting or appending his message to the terminal), and it appears on the comment page, maybe even without a subject. Is this at all possible? - ElAmericano (dímelo) 20:05, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
-
- Thanks for the help. - ElAmericano (dímelo) 21:00, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] My RFA withdrawal :(
Hello Smurrayinchester, it is my apologies to bring you that I've withdrawn my RFA. Due to the lack of experience, I would go under admin coaching first before trying again later. I would thank you for your vote in this RFA whether you voted support, oppose or neutral for me. I appericiate your comments (if you do have) you made and I hope to see you here in future. --Terence Ong 14:28, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
I couldn't afford the champagne, but, all the same, I got some corks (much cheaper). ;)
Congratulations on your new mop! Sango123 (e) 17:52, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
Hi! As your RfA is closing today and it doesn't seem like a hundred anti-Smurray activists will be marching into your nomination page, I'll take the liberty of saying Congratulations! ahead of time. May you have many happy returns to this day! Make sure to abuse use your power at every opportunity wisely; now you can start making life terrible for newbies vandals! Hehe :) Way to go! Congrats once again! Igor the Lion(Roar!) 12:51, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
- Congratulations. I've just seen one of your thank you banners at User_talk:Pegasus1138 and unfortunately you've been linking to your old RFA which did not succeed! You also didn't sign. I thought you might like to know, perhaps a sly correction would be in order :) --kingboyk 19:27, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

Well done, and congratulations!! -- Natalya 20:17, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
- Although I didn't make my feelings known (because, as I said at DfA, we haven't interacted and I just didn't know enough), congrats and best wishes just the same. No reply necessary. ++Lar: t/c 20:36, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Congratulations!
Congratulations! It's my pleasure to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. You might find the new administrators' how-to guide helpful. Cheers! -- Francs2000 17:55, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
- Congratulations! I've just remembered, you asked for me to look at your CSS - I'll let you know my thoughts. Another thing - I've asked a few people for this but they all seem to be away! I'm developing my caction JS and need the source code that admins get to give them protect, delete, block etc. buttons on a page. Could you please point your browser at a user page, view the source and e-mail me the code from <div id="p-cactions"> to the end of that div? Many thanks. haz (user talk)e 20:01, 19 March 2006
Congratulations! You're more than welcome for the nomination. --TantalumTelluride 20:26, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
- Congrats from me, too. If you need any help wielding the mop, don't hesitate to drop me a note - though I'm sure you'll be a great admin without any help! Grutness...wha? 06:08, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
- Congratulations and all the best. --Bhadani 07:10, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Monobook.CSS
Great CSS you've got! Personally, I'd change the sky blue to more of a brick red, as that's not really my colour. Also, try adding this:
#p-cactions li:hover { border: 1px dotted #000000; }
#p-personal li a:hover { border:1px dotted #000000; }
That should give quite a nice effect. Otherwise, pretty good! (I would steal it, but I'm using IE...) haz (user talk)e 20:28, 19 March 2006
- Version 2 of my caction tool has now been released for admins (with your help - thanks!). To change to the new version, add the following lines to your monobook.js
{{subst:js|User:Haza-w/cactions.js}}
var ctIsAdmin = 1;
- and then purge the browser cache by hitting Ctrl-F5. Please report any bugs to me. Thanks.
- Also, could you please do one more favour for me? On protected pages, such as the Main Page, does the "protect" tab change to "unprotect" or not? Also, what about semi-protected pages, such as Wikipedia:Hangman? Thanks again! haz (user talk) 13:56, 20 March 2006
[edit] Cactions bugfix
Hi Smurrayinchester. I think you reported the "whitespace" bug in the caction tool, whereby a large blank area was added at the end of every page. I'm glad to inform you that the bug has been fixed. If you find any more bugs, please report them. It may help to check the buglist at User:Haza-w/Caction tool. Thanks again. haz (user talk) 16:45, 20 March 2006
- One final request. Could you please go to a page which has been deleted, such as User:Haza-w/cactions_lowres.js, and e-mail me the source code of the cactions toolbar (<div id="p-cactions" etc.) to include the undeletion tab? (Assuming of course that admins get one. It's really hard developing for something you can't see!)
- Also, I didn't really understand your feature request about editing section 0. Please explain it more simpler! (Layman's terms always work the best in my case, especially on a Monday.) haz (user talk) 21:11, 20 March 2006
- I fixed the watch button bug in the last 30 seconds (!) after Nightstallion reported it. Ctrl-F5 should do the trick. Cheers ;-) haz (user talk) 11:00, 21 March 2006
[edit] Articles you might like to edit, from SuggestBot
SuggestBot predicts that you will enjoy editing some of these articles. Have fun!
SuggestBot picks articles in a number of ways, from comparing articles that need work to other articles you've edited, to choosing articles randomly (ensuring that all articles with cleanup tags get a chance to be cleaned up). It tries to recommend only articles that other Wikipedians have marked as needing work. Your contributions make Wikipedia better -- thanks for helping.
If you have feedback on how to make SuggestBot better, please tell me on SuggestBot's talk page. Thanks from ForteTuba, SuggestBot's caretaker.
P.S. You received these suggestions because your name was listed on the SuggestBot request page. If this was in error, sorry about the confusion. -- SuggestBot 00:31, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #1
|
Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Wikipedia to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience:
- "No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Wikipedia's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention."
|
|
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them. |
Note from the editor
|
Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone! |
|
|
- Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before.
- Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log.
- In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time.
- The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified.
- A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community.
- The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially.
- Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on.
- The Advisory Council is not going to be proposed to be expanded by the Advisory Council themselves, if others want to propose it, they will listen.

[edit] User page design
Hi! I'm new to wiki-formatting and wanted to jazz up my user page somewhat. I was going to ask you to help through the project at Esperanza, but wanted to learn a bit of mark-up myself - in the end I took the code for your page and played about with it to see how it worked, and made the page at User:Aquilina/Sandbox. I just wondered if you minded me temporarily using this as my userpage until I learn more and can alter it more for myself? I've changed a few things, but it's still noticeably from your design. If I did use it, I would put your name on it for due credit! If you'd rather I didn't use it though, that's absolutely no problem - I learnt a lot by experimenting! Many thanks, Aquilina 20:25, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
- Many thanks! I've got the user page and talk page up and running now with a few extra modifications, I'll do the rest in the next few days. Thanks again! Aquilina 13:12, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
- "Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."

Thanks for updating DYK, but from watching the process as a non-admin, I think you're supposed to work backwards from the older stuff on the waiting list. Also, I had deliberately created two of swimming articles on different days so that they could both included, because the guidelines suggest that one shouldn't have two articles of the same topic in the same update, but you included Frank Beaurepaire and Michelle Ford, both which I created as swimming bios in anyway :) ! The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
- This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
