1725 is the earliest documented reference of this company. At that time the Miquel family made paper by hand in mills driven by the Anoja River. It was not until almost 100 years later that the Miquel family started specializing in cigarette paper.

In 1879 it moved production factory to La Pobla de Claramunt and founded the company Miquel y Costas Hermanos.

In 1929, the company was incorporated and took its present name Miquel y Costas & Miquel S.A. Cigarette paper booklets first appeared in the 19th century and their international brand, Smoking, was introduced in 1924. Since then their specialized pulp, paper and booklet production combined with perpetual research has allowed them to develop new varieties of papers and booklets. Miguel Y Costas is now one of the largest paper manufacturers in the world. They also make the widely used Pure Hemp brand paper. They also produce many private label brands for other companies. As an example all Bambu brand papers and Skunk brand papers are made by Miguel Y Costas.

Smoking Master Silver are the thinnest paper product Miquel y Costas produces. They are very thin and small thus difficult to roll without ripping. Legend states that if one call roll an inside-out spliff with a Smoking Master Silver then they are at the professional level. Sales of this product have not been as high as expected (perhaps there are only a limited number of "master" rollers in the marketplace or perhaps the paper is just too small for most smokers).
