[edit] History

In the year 1893, Charles Anthoni Johnson Brooke, the second White Rajah of Sarawak founded the "Government Lay School", a boys' school. The first registration only recorded 100 students from standards 1 to 5. 36 years later, the name of the school was changed to "James Brooke Malay School". That school was moved to a new site at Jawa Road(now P.Ramlee Road)in 1940 and given the name "Madrasah Melayu"(which is now the Islamic Museum).
Due to the increasing number of students, the Sarawak State Government built SMK Green Road at Green Road. SMK Green Road started in 1963 with its students consisting mainly of those from "Madrasah Melayu".
SMK Green Road was officially opened on 10 June 1965 by Mr Abdul Aziz (the Chief Secretary of The Ministry of Education then) with 335 students and 25 teachers. As of 2006, the school has 2054 students and 156 teachers. The school motto is May We Grow As One.

The name of the school is derived from the road where it is situated- Green Road. During the Japanese Occupation, the Japanese planted rubber along Green Road. As a result, the road was given the name "Green" because of the lush greeneries. According to reliable resources, the school is believed to have been an orchard.
