Under the Shadow is a Christian rock band which was started in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The band was once seldom known outside of their territory, but more recently, they have gained a strong popularity boost thanks to the song "Your Grace" being used as a worship song in many Seventh Day Adventist congregations [1] and the opening of a MySpace has allows others to download audio samples. Many Christian radio stations are also beginning to play the band's music. The band is also a part of the Christian Song Writers Group [2].

[edit] In the Beginning

The band began to play in 2004 as a part of school functions. The first shows for the band were at Sandia View Academy, a small private school in Corrales, New Mexico. Before 2004 the band consisted solely of John Marler, whom just played his guitar during worship service in churches and in school. As time went on, school friends Kevin Garner and Byron Alverez decided to take guitar lessons from John Marler. Not long after, they began to get ideas of forming a band. But before the dream took swing Byron Alverez had to leave the group. But the band became full once Aaron Rodriguez and Jerry joined the band.

Their early songs were more acoustic in nature. Along with the growing members, came a more complex electric guitar driven style. Their lyrics have still kept the same spiritual significance and the overall mood of their songs still represent getting over problems through God. Although, their lyrics do try to keep from repeating God's name too much.

The name could be inspired by the Bible Texts:

  • Ecclesiastes 6:12

For who knows what is good for a man in life, during the few and meaningless days he passes through like a shadow? Who can tell him what will happen under the sun after he is gone?

  • Isaiah 34:15

The owl will nest there and lay eggs, she will hatch them, and care for her young under the shadow of her wings; there also the falcons will gather, each with its mate.

The LORD's anointed, our very life breath, was caught in their traps. We thought that under his shadow we would live among the nations.

The band has a fanbase mostly within' the state of New Mexico. However, after their song "Your Grace" was used in Seventh Day Adventist churches they gained a group of onlookers within the churches. Also, their songs "Breath Again" and "Falling" can be heard on various Christian radio stations.
