Talk:Smirking Chimp

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

From WP:RfD:

  • Smirking Chimp --> George W. Bush, and Commander Codpiece --> George W. Bush. Several admins have taken it upon themselves to delete these redirects, feeling that they are inappropriate. I believe that they clearly fall within WP:R policy (Exact quote: "For example, redirecting Dubya to George W. Bush might be considered offensive, but the redirect aids accidental linking, makes the creation of duplicate articles less likely, and is useful to some people, so it should not be deleted."). If someone feels that a redirect is inappropriate, it is incumbent among them to discuss and debate the issue here, not summarily delete it without any discussion whatsoever. To do the latter constitutes a clear abuse of administrative powers. 63.173.114.141 22:11, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)
    • Keep 'em deleted. If I were to ask the average Joe on the street who "Commander Codpiece" was, he'd have no idea. If I were to ask about "Smirking Chimp", he might make a guess -- there was that one photomontage of George W. Bush and a chimp. If I were to ask who "Dubya" was, I'd get the immediate answer of "The President". --Carnildo 23:24, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)
    • Keep deleted. Offensive and not in common use. SlimVirgin (talk) 01:23, Apr 11, 2005 (UTC)
    • For Smirking Chimp: Same outcome as vote on Slick Willy', which at present looks like a Keep. Both are insulting nicknames, and both Smirking Chimp and Slick Willy are in quite common use. My impression is that Commander Codpiece is much less commonly used than Smirking Chimp, and I vote delete for the Commander Codpiece redirect. --BM 02:06, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)
    • Keep as long as it redirects to List of U.S. Presidential nicknames and not directly to George W. Bush, since doing the latter might read as an implicit endorsement of the nickname. Michael Snow's suggestion here is a good one - using the nickname list as a redirect for nicknames should nicely split the difference between those who want the redirects gone and those who want them pointed to the target of the nickname. • Delete. Firstly I doubt very much if anyone will actually bother searching for Commander Codpiece etc. in an encyclopedia, and secondly it doesn't do us much good by acknowledging these blink-and-you'll-miss-'em insults. Obviously widely used nicknames, e.g. Dubya, should be kept. Rje 15:02, Apr 11, 2005 (UTC)
    • Keep Smirking Chimp; Delete Commander Codpiece. The first is very common, the second one not. — Stevie is the man! Talk | Work 16:25, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)
    • Keep Smirking Chimp. Delete Commander Codpiece. -Kbdank71 20:44, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)
    • By the way, I don't think that admins should be deleting redirects while a vote is still in progress. The purpose of a RFD vote is to decide whether or not the redirect should be deleted, so to delete while the vote is still in progress is like executing a defendant while the jury is still deliberating. Consequently, I have re-created the Smirking Chimp redirect to List of U.S. Presidential nicknames. Please wait for a consensus to be reached before deleting it. This link has been re-created at least 3 times by different users, so it seems there is a legitimate dispute here. I did not re-create Commander Codpiece, as this seems to be significantly more dubious and in less common use. Firebug 20:26, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)
    • Keep both deleted'. Highly POV, obviously being used to make a political comment. RickK 22:05, Apr 11, 2005 (UTC)
    • Keep Smirking Chimp and Delete Commander Codpiece. But only keep the redirect to List of U.S. Presidential nicknames, not George W. Bush as I can't imagine anyone seriously wanting to look up Bush would type in a nickname. Smirking Chimp is not about to become an article, and it is in the "nickname" article.--Chammy Koala 23:00, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)
    • Keep Smirking Chimp as redirect to List of U.S. Presidential nicknames and Delete Commander Codpiece. olderwiser 01:37, Apr 12, 2005 (UTC)
    • Keep the two articles as they are (first as a redirect, 2nd deleted). ugen64 06:14, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC)
    • Keep both of these redirects. Recreate if they've been deleted. --Tony Sidaway|Talk 07:34, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC)
    • Comment: It will be necessary to change WP:R policy. Depending on the outcome, the example should either be replaced as inappropriate, or changed to indicate the situation is factual, rather than hypothetical. Aliter 16:46, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC)
    • Since the Smirking Chimp nickname is primarily driven by the website, I've replaced the redirect with a stub about the website. Commander Codpiece should stay deleted, it doesn't have enough currency to warrant even a redirect to the list of nicknames. --Michael Snow 16:47, 12 Apr 2005 (UTC)
