Smithville, Ontario

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Smithville is a village in the township of West Lincoln. It is located on former Highway 20 between Hamilton and Niagara Falls in the Niagara Region of Ontario, Canada.

Smithville is located on Canadian Pacific's Hamilton Subdivision, and was formerly the location of a junction with the railroad's Dunnville spur. The latter was abandoned in 2003, and has subsequently been removed (as far as Attercliff).

Smithville is also along the Twenty Mile Creek, a waterway which was important to its early settlement and development.

Although small, it is quite well-known for the annual agriculture festival known as PoultryFest. Until recently the PoultryFest had a popular event called chicken chariot race, where people built chariots and hitched up chickens to see what homemade chariot would reach the finish line first. In addition to dairy, poultry farming has become a major industry for Smithville. It also continues to hold an agricultural fair on the Labour Day weekend every year.

For a tiny village, Smithville has much to fascinate the weary traveler, including numerous restaurants, a Giant Tiger, I.G.A, Tim Hortons, Beer Store and even a liquor store.

Smithville has a remarkable number of churches for a population of less than 5,000. There are a Pentecostal Church, a Roman Catholic Church, a Lutheran Church, an Anglican Church, a Presbyterian Church, a Church of Christ, a Christian Reformed Church, and a Canadian Reformed Church, as well as a United Church of Canada.

In 2001, Smithville was reported to have a population of 2,961 (Ontario Official Road Map)
