Smethport is a borough in McKean County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,684 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of McKean CountyGR6.

Smethport is located at 41°48′36″N, 78°26′42″W (41.809928, -78.444888)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 4.4 km² (1.7 mi²). 4.3 km² (1.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.60% is water.

Smethport is at high altitude, namely 1,488 feet above sea level, and Prospect Hill, a beautiful eminence not far distant, rising above sea level 2,495 feet.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 1,684 people, 686 households, and 456 families residing in the borough. The population density was 389.3/km² (1,009.5/mi²). There were 739 housing units at an average density of 170.9/km² (443.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough was 99.05% White, 0.53% African American, 0.06% Native American, 0.06% Asian, 0.12% from other races, and 0.18% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.59% of the population.

There were 686 households out of which 33.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.8% were married couples living together, 10.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.4% were non-families. 29.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.94.

In the borough the population was spread out with 26.0% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 86.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.2 males.

The median income for a household in the borough was $34,934, and the median income for a family was $42,153. Males had a median income of $30,962 versus $22,159 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $17,297. About 7.6% of families and 8.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.4% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.

Smethport is the home of Hamlin Bank and Trust Company, a community bank founded by Henry Hamlin in 1863. Smethport Auto Parts was started by Stillman Wells in the 1940's. His son, William E. Wells, took over the business in the early 1990's. The business focused on automobile and truck parts.
