From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Smartville is a town in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. It is one of the many historic towns in California's gold country. Smartville is located in Yuba County, about 35 miles east of Marysville on State Highway 20.
Smartville is named for Jim Smart, a local hotel proprietor during the days of the Gold Rush. Other nearby Gold Rush towns with picturesque names are Timbuctoo, Sucker Flat and Rough and Ready. Extensive placer mining tailings remain throughout the area.
Smartville gave its name to a co-extensive geologic zone of the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, the Smartville Complex which is associated with the presence of gold veins in the Mother Lode country.
