The smallmouth velvet dogfish, Scymnodon ichiharai, is a harmless sleeper shark of the family Dalatiidae, found in the tropical central Atlantic between latitudes 65° N and 36° S, from the surface to 1,450 m. Its length is up to 70 cm.

The smallmouth velvet dogfish is usually found on or near the bottom, feeding on bottom fishes and invertebrates. Its flesh is utilized dried salted for human consumption and for fishmeal.

Reproduction is ovoviviparous.
