The Society of Modern American Science Heroes, or SMASH, is a team of fictional superheroes whose adventures are published by America's Best Comics and take place on the parallel world of Terra Obscura.
[edit] History
SMASH first appeared in Tom Strong #11 (2001) as a team that had ostensibly been in existence since the 1940s, corresponding to the Golden Age of Comic Books. Although the individual characters were around then (see Nedor Comics), they were not part of a team called SMASH. Rather, SMASH was created by Alan Moore and Chris Sprouse in the Modern Age of Comic Books as a form of retcon in order to create a backstory where none actually existed.
The Golden Age lineup could be said to encompass most of the Nedor Comics heroes as either members or auxiliary members.
The origin of SMASH's formation has not, as yet, been revealed. The original name of the group was The Society of Major American Science Heroes, later changed to The Society of Modern American Science Heroes after the incidents of the first Terra Obscura mini-series.
The modern lineup consists of the modern versions of the original Nedor heroes and their now adult sidekicks.
