[edit] Greetings

Hi,

I noticed you were new and had been editing football articles, so I thought I'd give you a few links that it took me a while to find. Hope they're useful.

Good work on the Glory hunter article. Mark272 17:12, 29 November 2005 (UTC)

Perhaps your section could be moved into a new article about the rising commercialisation in football, with a link to this article and vice versa. Mark272

[edit] Regarding FYROM vs Macedonia

Talk:Republic_of_Macedonia#Change_of_FYROM_to_.22The_former_Yugoslav_Republic_of_Macedonia.22

Sure, you can use UN provisional reference "the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia" (no FYROM), but even it is agreed by our government, it is offensive. I might believe that using 2 letter and 3 letter ISO codes in the tables (MK and MKD) might help a lot. Here's this list for the other countries too: ISO 3166 Codes (Countries) And Wikipedia agrees that the name of my country is solely Republic of Macedonia and mentions that UN is using some other reference...

Regards, Kirev 00:27, 21 December 2005 (UTC)

R.Macedonia is quite OK. Thanks, Kirev 01:25, 21 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] 2008 European Football Championship (qualifying)

Hi, you left out Moldova vs. Greece in Group C fixtures for September 2 for Euro 2008 but I added it. Don't know if it is in the proper sequence (i.e. 1st, 2nd, or 3rd game of the day), but at least it's included. User:169.133.253.10

[edit] Category:England footballers

Hi Slumgum - I'm thinking of requesting a renaming of Category:England footballers to Category:England international footballers, for the reasons laid out in Category talk:England footballers (too similar, naming scheme becomes problematic when extended to other countries). Do you have any objections? Qwghlm 11:05, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

Well, category renamings have to be discussed & voted on as per deletions etc. but the grunt work in actually doing the recategorising is done by bots, so it's just a matter of getting a consensus in favour. I've done the hard bit and listed the proposed move for both categories at Categories for deletion (confusingly, it's where moves as well as deletes are discussed), so do make your opinion known there too. Thanks. Qwghlm 23:03, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] re: tables

Hi! Thanks for advice - that's my first day as wiki editor. Do you know a fast way to convert from HTML to wiki code? 'cause otherwise it would take ages to change. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Sergiyprotsiv (talkcontribs).

[edit] Footballer of the year

Yes, I know about the awards but I feel that overall Keane was a bigger influence in the 90s than the 00's and Zola the other way round, it seems to be convention not to have players in two decades (unlike managers). Bob Palin 02:08, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Gilberto Silva

Thanks for your changes on the Gilberto Silva article.

Where did you find his correct club appearance/goal stats, and what competitions count towards said totals?

Oh, okay. Actually, funny thing is, I didn't realise until after editing, and referencing the talk page, that both the edit, and the talk page comment to which I referred were both made by you. In essence, I unwittingly told YOU to "see talk page", to see the comment YOU had just left. I felt a right fool, but I now understand what happened. Cheers! (Do they still say "Cheers" over there? [edit] Dave Bennett

I noticed you'd moved the page from David Bennett (footballer) to Dave Bennett, but moving articles by cutting and pasting causes problems with the edit histories, so I fixed it by deleting Dave Bennett and recreating it using the page move function. I'm pretty sure I didn't lose any content by doing so, but you might want to check it. If you want to move a page in future and aren't able to use the move function please get an admin to do it or list it at Wikipedia:Requested moves as it can be a pain in the arse to fix the edit histories once someone has edited the moved article. Thanks, CTOAGN (talk) 23:07, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] What an ass

You really think "I AM RIGHT!!!!!!" is an appropriate thing to leave in a change comment?
—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 71.57.111.238 (talkcontribs).

On its own, no. When I am right and another person has wrongly reverted my edit, "rv to last version by me. I AM RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!" is an entirely appropriate thing to leave in a change comment. Think. Slumgum | yap | stalk | 20:29, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Club Emblems

Hey,

I noticed that using club emblems on non-club pages was totally fine, see here, among hundreds of other pages...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yugoslav_League_Championship http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coupe_d%27URSS_de_football

If this somehow contradicts the fair law use, I can change the copyright info from Logo to the following...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Dynamo_Kyiv.png

Gimme a heads up really quick, because these are really useful graphics..

--Palffy 21:17, May 15, 2006 (UTC)

I'm looking around the web for the legality of this issue and I will post it somewhere if I can find something. I deleted the cumulative table on purpose actually, because it had no date when it was last update (and I imagine would be a pain to maintain considering theyre only 2-3 regular Ukraine footy updaters..) But yea, apparently its permitted in Ukraine, so if it comes down to it, I can change the copyright info on the logos. I'll keep you updated on this and thanks for bringing this to my attention. --Palffy 21:39, May 15, 2006 (UTC)
After further research, you were correct to make this assumption. Although this will not specifically to the case because of Ukraine copyrights, it will hold true for other football logos, until Wikipedia changes its policy. Read my response here. Thanks, --Palffy 22:50, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Template:Arsenal F.C. Squad

Hey Slumgum - having taken a look at the template (and the many others that have popped up mimicking it) I have to say I don't like the "|" vertical bar characters - they're fine for when you have a few links that need separating but when there are 40+ players the bars clutter the space up a good deal, and the broken vertical line effect they give if you run your eye down the middle of the box isn't very pleasing to the eye, IMHO.

I much prefer the neater regularity in the alternative column-based design you made [1] - it doesn't need the vertical bars, and is much clearer as a result. Would you mind if I changed the design of that (and the England squad template) to the column-based one? Qwghlm 11:49, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

Fair enough, it's the not the most important thing in the world so I won't kick up a fuss. And no, I'm not User:Behindcurtain3, it's just sheer coincidence. My sockpuppets are far more subtle ;-). Qwghlm 22:53, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Template:Country Squad 2006 World Cup

Hi there! A user creted the {{Argentina Squad 2006 World Cup}} form your original and I thought about making it wider so it would take less space, since there's empty space on both sides of the template. I cheked and something between 50 and 60 would be just great. I thought about changing the Argentine template only, but it would be niced if they all had the same width. Any special reason to have made them so thin? Good wiking, Mariano(t/c) 12:33, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

AmiDaniel showed me this trick when I was trying to deal with spacing issues in several articles [2]. It seems to work fine (I've made a test), so we could add it (or simply the code "<br clear="all" />") within the Squad templates. Neurillon 01:03, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Edit feature on football articles

Yeah, perhaps you're right. I noticed that our Japanese compatriots had emulated our templates and had an edit feature, so I used that on our templates. Thinking about it I guess the Japanese wiki probably has less vandals, and when the world cup starts there will probably be a very large number of anonymous contributors editing these articles, so we should probably remove the easy way to vandalise. I'll remove it from the templates tomorrow, or you can remove it if you have time. Cheers, jacoplane 21:59, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thank you

Hi Slumgum,

Your note made me smile and, I confess, puzzle over the etymology of the word. I must confess to finding words a lot of fun in that our language is ever evolving which both helps and hinders communication. Hopefully the former rather than the latter. You are right, however, my normal instinctive spelling would have been for the double "l" rather than the treble "l" but I have no problem with N. American spellings; indeed, they make the language richer. In short ("Too late!" the invisible crowd silently roared), I shall not trust this Firefox extension again. :-) Regards -- Alias Flood 00:14, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Everton badge

no worries, why is it only allowed on that page? Is there no way to get approval for it on the template?

[edit] Squad templates

Hi Slumgum and congratulations on the squad template idea, it seems to be really popular. I'm sure you've noticed the disagreement I'm having with SenorKristobbal regarding the EFC template as you've been trying to add fixes based on the outcomes of reverts. I'm hoping that I can convince you that the current implementation is non-standard and an effort should be made to bring the squad templates into a more cohesive group.

I have to say, the whole squad template thing feels strange... It's a nominally standard layout that's being implemented as a template n times for n squads. How well does Wikipedia handle nested templates at the moment? I think it would be a great candidate for an over-arching template that could then have the squad details injected in an intermediate template which could be included on a page.

Anyway, work has been going on with the fb start/end infobox consolidation system. It's being used on somewhere between 1000 and 1500 pages on the English Wikipedia. The benefit this brings is one of consistency to all infoboxes that are used at the bottom of football related articles. I converted the EFC template to follow this approach and then modified all of the pages that included it. I think it works quite well. Do you have any strong objection to the infoboxes being brought to heel under the fb start/end system? veila# 11:35, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Savo Milosevic

Hi, thanks for the corrections/better links you made to this article.

I'm new to Wiki (only been on it 2 weeks) and one thing I can't work out how to is to insert that vertical line in the link that disambiguates said link. What set of keystrokes do I need to press to get that? Regards Martyn Smith 10:25, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

The | symbol is called a Vertical bar or pipe. There should be one on your keyboard somewhere. Mine is to the left of z, requiring the shift button. Otherwise there should be one in the 'insert character box' that appears when you edit a page. It's between the ~ and ° symbols. Hope that's help.

[edit] North and South

I noticed that you added a comment about the division of the league cup into north and south sections some of the clubs in the northern section are actually located further south than some of the southern section clubs. Do you know if that's true for the forthcoming competition? I seem to remember last time Hereford were in the LDV cup they were in the northern section, despite being some 60 miles south of Shrewsbury, who were in the southern section.
SLUMGUM  yap  stalk  00:31, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

Yes, it is true for this season's League Cup. Notts County are in the southern section, despite being located further north than both Derby County and Nottingham Forest (just), who are both in the northern section[5]. - Green Tentacle 17:36, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

I agree that they can look better but they are now all in the original club template format to avoid controversy, and make them all look standardised. Club crests aren't allowed, for copyright/fair use reasons, although I would very much like to use them. Reasons are stated further in the templates' category talk page.  SLUMGUM  yap  stalk  14:19, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

Indefinitely usually means never. See Wikipedia:Templates for deletion/Log/2006 June 30 for what's happening for the 1990,94,98 and 2002 templates.  SLUMGUM  yap  stalk  15:55, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

First of all, I don't see anything related to the 2006 England squad template and why should we keep a soon to be outdated template? Kingjeff 16:05, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

Don't ask me, I'm the person that wanted to get rid of them. All the old ones are proposed for deletion, the current ones will become old ones and will (highly likely) be treated as those are. If you want to delete the old ones, please make your opinion known at the TfD page.  SLUMGUM  yap  stalk  16:09, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

Slumgum, just on the Italian Squad templates. I know for a fact that the Italian ones represent only players loaned in and have never contained players who are at present loaned out as they are simply not part of the squad. Including loaned out players (while owned by the club) would be wrong as they are not technically registered at the club). As it stands, none of the Italian club templates contain loaned-out players. Just thought I'd let you know. Niall123 18:10, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Overlinking

I think you incorrectly reverted my revert on the Scott Carson page. His infobox was overlinked and it shouldn't be that way. I had this argument a few months ago with an admin who basically told me "I don't care if you think it looks messy, but wikipedia policy says that it shouldn't be overlinked". It'd be cool if you revert it back, cheers, aLii 16:27, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

erk.. you did Zenden too? Revert it please. aLii 16:29, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

Overlinking rules do not apply to some categories of pages or sections, such as lists or formal definitions.
SLUMGUM  yap  stalk  16:30, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

Yes, I take that to mean that the article and the infobox are both allowed an instance of the same link within the same page, not that an infobox should be allowed infinite instances of the same link. Your interpretation is certainly against the spirit of the overlinking policy, even if not explicitly stated. aLii 16:42, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
