Slovak Ore Mountains
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Slovak Ore Mountains (Slovak: Slovenské rudohorie) is an extensive mountainous region in the Spiš region of Slovakia in the Carpathians. In the geomorphological system, the Slovak Ore Mountains are an "area" of the "subprovince" called Inner Western Carpathians.
They are bounded by Zvolen in the west, Košice in the east, the Hron river and the Hornád river in the north and the Southern Slovak Basin (Juhoslovenská kotlina) and Košice Basin in the south.
[edit] Subdivision
The Slovak Ore Mountains do not have a central ridge - they consist of several independent sections:
- Vepor Mountains (SK: Veporské vrchy)
- Spiš-Gemer Karst (SK: Spišsko-gemerský kras)
- Stolica Mountains (SK: Stolické vrchy)
- Revúca Highlands (SK: Revúcka vrchovina)
- Volovec Mountains (SK: Volovské vrchy)
- Čierna hora (SK, literally: Black Mountain)
- Rožňava Basin (SK: Rožňavská kotlina)
- Slovak Karst (SK: Slovenský kras) + North-Borsod Karst (Hungarian: Észak-Borsodi karszt)
The North-Borsod Karst lies in northern Hungary.
[edit] Characteristics
Basic data:
- highest peak: Stolica , 1476 m above sea level
- length: app. 140 km
- width: app. 40 km
- area: app. 4000 km²
Since this is a very extensive geomorpholical unit, no general characterization is appropriate. The geomorphological structure is varied and has crystalline, Mezozoic and volcanic rocks.
Since timeimmemorial, especially in the Early Modern Times, this has been an area (as the name suggests) of heavy mining activities, but most of the material is by now exhausted.
