Slieverue

Slieverue (Sliabh Rua or Red Mountain in Irish) is a parish in County Kilkenny, Ireland. It is located to the north of Waterford Harbour, where the rivers Barrow and Suir come together. Despite the name, the land is relatively low-lying and fertile. The village of Slieverue is located alongside the main N25 road to New Ross and is approximately three kilometres (two miles) away from the city of Waterford. The Church of the Assumption, a nineteenth century Roman Catholic church in Slieverue village, is the only church in the parish. It is the second oldest in Kilkenny. There were earlier churches and these were situated at the following; Drumdowney - The church was built in honour of Saint Patrick after he had visited the area. Kilmurray - This church was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin it was at Kilmurray crossroads. Kilaspy - This church was dedicated to the presiding bishop, the site of the church is marked on sites and monuments maps. Rathpatrick- This church is one of the most recent ones as you can still see the remains of the church. A prominent hill known as Carriganurra, features a large concrete cross at its summit. Slieverue parish is home to Belview Port, the main sea port of Waterford. There are two national schools in the parish: Slieverue and Ringville. Atateemore near Slieverue is the birthplace of John O'Donovan (1806-1861) an Irish scholar who translated the ancient text Annals of the Four Masters into English. There are sixteen townlands situated in the parish of Slieverue such as; Ballincrea, Nicolastown, Treanaree, Carriganura, Atateemore, Rathpatrick, Ballinamona, Drumdowney Upper, Drumdowney Lower and Ringville. Every year a celebration of local history and music called "Eigse Sliabh Rua-Ui Dea" takes place at Slieverue.
