The first record of the song dates back from May/June 1999. It was recorded at Caverock Studio/ Finnvox Studios (Both in Finland).

Together with the songs "Walking in the Air", "Angels Fall First" and "Swanheart", Drakkar Records Sleeping Sun was released for the first time on the MCD Sleeping Sun - 4 Ballads Of The Eclipse.

Later in 1999, the song was added to all new releases of the 1998 album Oceanborn, and in 2004 also on the compilation album Tales from the Elvenpath.

A video was shot for the song, in which Tarja seemed to have red hair. The videoclip includes many landscape characteristics of Finland, for example the forests, the beaches and a large grain field. The video was directed by Sami Käyhkö.

(2005)

In 2005, Nightwish announced that they were busy recording a new compilation album, entitled Highest Hopes. "Sleeping Sun" would also appear on this album, however not in the original state. The new version released as a single, with the full new version, the radio edited new version, and the original version.

The band also made a video for the new version. This time around, the video is not intime like the original one was. Rather than showing Tarja against a background showing Finland's landscapes; we're seeing a medieval war. In the middle leftovers of the battle, Tarja sings the 'renewed' "Sleeping Sun".
