[edit] Features
The natural amphitheater created by "Slayter Hill" can hold an estimated 20,000 people. Architect Joseph Baker used Stonehenge in England as a basis for the concept of Slayter Center. The 200-ton concrete roof is suspended from a tall steel tripod by stainless steel cables. The stage can seat a 100+ player orchestra. Below the stage are a rehearsal room, dressing rooms and storage facilities. Slayter is also the home to the Purdue Jazz Bands.
On mornings of home football games, Slayter Center transforms into an exciting pep rally known as "Thrill on the Hill." The Purdue "All-American" Marching Band, with more thatn 340 members, performs upbeat tunes showcasing music from their half time show for the day and other favorites from the current season's repertoire. The Purdue Cheerleaders and Purdue Pete and Rowdy join in the fun signing autographs and meeting fans. This is also the place for a quick photo op with the Boilermaker Special and X-tra Special before they head to Ross-Ade with the band for pregame.
"Slayter Hill" is also more popularly used in the winter time as a large sledding hill for students when it snows. Items known to have been used by creative students as sleds? Think mattresses, futon pads, dumpster lids, cafeteria trays, water intertubes, garbage bags and the occasional traditional sled.
