Slater, Missouri

Slater is a city in Saline County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,083 at the 2000 census.

Two well-known former residents of Slater are the actor Steve McQueen and former Olympic gold medalist and NBA basketball player, Joe Klein. McQueen lived in Slater for a time with relatives before leaving in his teens. Klein grew up in Slater and graduated from high school there in 1980.

Slater has a weekly newspaper called the Slater Main Street News. Formerly, the publication was called the Slater News-Rustler.

The school mascot is the Wildcats.

Slater is located at 39°13′18″N, 93°3′45″W (39.221658, -93.062529)^GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.8 km² (1.5 mi²), all land.

As of the census^GR2 of 2000, there were 2,083 people, 895 households, and 539 families residing in the city. The population density was 554.7/km² (1,439.1/mi²). There were 1,072 housing units at an average density of 285.4/km² (740.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 87.04% White, 9.60% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.01% from other races, and 1.92% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.63% of the population.

There were 895 households out of which 28.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.9% were married couples living together, 12.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.7% were non-families. 36.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 21.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.26 and the average family size was 2.88.

In the city the population was spread out with 23.2% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 21.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 92.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $25,270, and the median income for a family was $36,281. Males had a median income of $25,969 versus $18,526 for females. The per capita income for the city was $12,863. About 13.5% of families and 18.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 24.4% of those under age 18 and 18.6% of those age 65 or over.
