Skokie, also known as Dempster or Dempster/Skokie, is a station on the Chicago Transit Authority's 'L' system, on the Yellow Line at 5005 Dempster Street in Skokie, Illinois (directional coordinates 8800 north, 5000 west). It is one of two stops on the Yellow Line, and currently the northern/western terminus of line, although an extension of the line beyond Dempster has been considered. It is the only CTA rail station in Skokie, and is at grade level.
The station was originally constructed in 1925, and the current stationhouse has been in place since 1994. The original stationhouse, which is designated as a Historic Place stands 130 feet east of its original location, moved at a cost of $1 million in order to make space for the new station and its parking lot. The former station's address is 5001 Dempster Street.
The station houses bus stops for Pace buses and is also a Greyhound bus terminal.
Plans are underway to build a new Yellow Line station at Oakton Street, serving downtown Skokie and nearby neighborhoods. The station is slated to open in 2008.
