Skodje Bridge
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Skodje Bridge (Skodje bru) is a bridge that crosses Straumen in Skodje municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway.
There are actually two bridges in Skodje. The new bridge is called Straumsbrua in Norwegian. It is a steel arch bridge, 290 metres long. It was opened on July 3, 2004. It replaced the old Skodje Bridge. The new bridge is a toll bridge.
The old Skodje Bridge is also an arch bridge. It is approximately 550 metres long (?), with a maximum clearance to the sea of 14 metres. The building of the old bridge started in 1911, and the bridge was opened in 1922. It cost 480000 kroner.
The old bridge still stands, but it is not in a good shape. For the last few years before the new bridge was opened, the old bridge got restrictions on the weight and width of the cars, and that meant that heavier traffic had to take a longer road through the town of Skodje. This was of course very impractical. With the new bridge in operation, the old bridge is now open only for pedestrians.
