[edit] Plot synopsis
Beginning with a cold open, we see a SWAT team descending on a house in the darkness. A battered and bloodied girl is bound and gagged in a chair inside. A man, whose face we cannot see, tries to escape the house, but the police train their guns on him, ordering him to stop. On turning around, it's revealed that the girl's attacker is Dean.
After the opening credits, the story back tracks a few days. Sam learns that his old college friend Zach has been arrested for murdering his girlfriend. Sam convinces Dean that they should go see Zach's sister, Rebecca, who insists that Zach is innocent. The brothers help her investigate the murder and soon discover that the real culprit is a being with shapeshifting abilities. It can split out of its skin and grow a new one, enabling him to take the form of anyone he chooses.
The shapeshifter takes on Dean's form, attacking and kidnapping Rebecca, Sam and the real Dean. The creature can also take the thoughts and memories of whomever it has become. While looking like Dean, it taunts Sam about the real Dean's bitterness and anger towards him.
When the creature, still appearing like Dean, goes to kill the girl in the opening teaser, Dean and Sam escape and go after it. When they finally kill it, it is still in Dean's form.
[edit] Arc Significance
As the shapeshifter was still in the form of Dean when it was killed, the murders it committed are attributed to Dean posthumously, and he is declared officially dead. Dean apparently being dead is referenced again later in the season in the episode "The Benders", and the murders he is believed to have committed are referenced in the second season episode "The Usual Suspects".
