Sketchblog

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Sketchblog is a particular type of blog that places the emphasis on the image, rather than on the text that is usually associated with blogs. While anyone is able to post their works, sketchblogs are considered by many to be a current electronic sketch pad portfolio for an artist’s works that is openly available to the public. Artists post sketches for both professional and experimental reasons. It is also important to point out that some blogs do contain pictures; just as some sketchblogs do contain text. The two can be distinguished when there is a clear emphasis on one over the other. It is a sure sign that it is a sketchblog when the images contained in the blog are not just being used for illustration of the text.

[edit] Sketchblog Artists

Sketchblog sites can either be composed of having one author who displays his or her work, or have Sketchblog sites which act more as a community of many different artists posting their works. Entries are usually posted by the author on a regular basis, and the resulting posts can usually be viewed in chronological order. The host usually puts a timestamp on a post when it is received so that the most recent post will appear first on the main page. Older entries may also be accessed through links or archives. Some kind of archive is usually available. Like typical blogs, most sketchblogs also have a feature allowing users to comment on a particular entry. Comments like these allow the sketchblog to establish its “community” of users based on the ideas of collaboration and sharing. Comments often lead back to a commenter’s site, further expanding the communication. Because sketchblogs and blogs invite user participation, some kind of content management is needed to protect and maintain the integrity of the site. However, these managed restrictions only extend to content—access itself is usually unrestricted and available to anyone on the internet.

[edit] Reasons For Using Sketchblog

There are a variety of reasons that people choose to put their sketches onto the internet in a blog format. For some, it is a chance to put their name out with a resume and a gallery of photos. For instance, Liz’s sketchblog happens to have her resume along with her gallery because she seeks to become an illustrator. For others, it may simply be a chance for them to share their work and have some sort of feedback. There are even some who already have jobs in the field of illustration who use sketch blogs to post the works they would not be able to submit to work.

[edit] Type of Artwork displayed in weblogs

A sketchblog can contain pictures of anything from anime to zebras. There is no discretion when it comes to a sketchblog and the randomness of images seems to be part of the mystique. There are no boundaries or guidelines one must follow, and sketchblogs have been known to contain caricatures found on John Mratz sketchblog to superheroes found on Mikes own personal soapbox!. Some go so far as to offer video of the works being created, such as those on Ray Frenden's Sketchblog. Furthermore, these works can be found to be drawn using both digital and traditional means.
