Skeith (.hack)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Skeith is a fictional boss monster and character from .hack, a franchise that encompasses several video games, anime and manga. Within the mega-popular MMORPG The World, it is a mysterious figure glimpsed by relatively few players.
Though there is little record of direct encounters with Skeith by players, most of the general public is unaware that Skeith is the first of the Eight Phases and those who are confronted by Skeith are Data Drained by it, rendering them comatose in the real world.
Revealed in several types of media, Skeith bears the full title Skeith, the Terror of Death.
His avatar appears as a humanoid seemingly comprised of rounded rock, having floating disjointed appendages, and a two-piece ring shaped horn. Skeith carries a red staff, which is a celtic cross in the original version of the game, and a Q-shaped staff in the American version and in .hack//SIGN, upon which he 'crucifies' his victims prior to Data Draining them.

[edit] Biography
[edit] Fragment
When Emma Wielant, the author of the epic poem entitled the Epitaph of Twilight died, Harald Hoerwick wanted to express the love he felt for her in the form of a virtual daughter. To accomplish this task he created the AI Morganna to gather emotional data, from which he hoped the Ultimate AI, Aura, could be born. Designing a game system around Morganna, he disguised her as a MMORPG known as Fragment and sold it to the CC Corporation.
Harald also created eight programs based on the eight phases found in the Epitaph of Twilight. These programs were designed to work together gathering different types of emotional data from humans, which Morganna would store for the sole purpose of being Data Drained. However, Morganna became jealous and began to take measures to prevent Aura's birth - one of these actions was reprogramming the eight Phases under her control, causing them to only collect data on negative emotions.
[edit] The World
During the final events .hack//SIGN, Tsukasa finally having the courage to stand up to people like her father and even Morgana is able to awaken Aura. Sora, no longer having any reason to stay with Morgana, renounces his alliance and asks friendship from Tsukasa. Giving them a message to head back to Net Slum, he stays behind a moment to taunt. Morgana, however prevents Sora from getting out, and gives the phase Skeith tangible form. Using his staff, Skeith levitates Sora and Data Drains him, causing the child behind the character to fall into a coma in real life.
Seeking to capture and delete Aura, Morgana attempted to upload Skeith to Net Slum. Detecting the intrusion, Helba has no choice but to shut down the server that contained Net Slum, returning Aura & Skeith somewhere within The World and causing all players in Net Slum to disconnect from the game.
Six months later in .hack//INFECTION, Skeith is seen by Kite and Orca while exploring the dungeon of Δ Bursting Passed Over Aqua Field at the start of the game. Skeith is seen chasing a girl in white, Aura. Later in the dungeon, Kite and Orca meet Aura, who presents Orca with an Installation Book known as the Book of Twilight. However, Aura is forced to flee when Skeith makes his reappearance.
Attempting to take him down, the high-leveled Orca attempts to bring down Skeith's Hit Points, only to discover that Skeith has infinite HP. Skeith Data Drains Orca before turning to the newbie Kite. Only the timely intervention of Helba saves Kite from sharing the same fate as Orca.
At the end of .hack//INFECTION, Skeith is found as the final boss at the bottom of the dungeon Θ Chosen Hopeless Nothingness. However, Kite is too late and when Aura is data Drained, her code is fragmented into several pieces and spread across The World. Skeith is finally defeated by Kite, who used the power of the Twilight Bracelet to Data Drain Skeith into a non-bugged form. However, the use of such a power on Skeith, gives Cubia a body from the remmants of Skeith's data, first created when the Twilight Bracelet was installed into Kite.
[edit] Legacy
In .hack//G.U., the data of the 8 phases were used to create player characters with the ability to use the 8 phases as avatars. Skeith is awakened by Haseo who uses it to defeat a group of player-killers in an arena battle. Haseo slowly learns how to control Skeith after losing control in a fight between him and Kuhn, who uses Magus, during the semi finals in the arena tournament.
The Skeith avatar has two attacks, a slash with its scythe and an energy blast shot attack. Once it breaks the protection on the enemy, it goes into Data Drain mode which allows Skeith to charge shots which initiate the Data Drain upon impact. Avatar battles in the game are between AIDA or other avatar users.
The other avatar users are:
- Atoli - Innis
- Kuhn - Magus
- Yata - Fidchell (Pronounced Fidhell)
- Sakubo- Gorre
- Endrance- Macha (Pronounced Maha In Game)
- Pi- Tarvos
- Ovan- Corbenik
Haseo faces Kite of the Azure Flame (aka Tri-edge) and his avatar form, "Azure Flame God", in the first volume. Skeith apparently has the ability to change its form when another avatar user combines his powers with Haseo, as seen when Endrance gives Haseo his own powers in order to combat an AIDA-infected Bordeux during an Arena fight in Volume 2.
