Skai TV

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Skai TV is a Greek commercial television network that returned from it's ashes back to the Greek airwaves after 7 years of absence.

Skai was originally launched in 1993 but several years later was sold and re-branded as
Alpha TV, currently one of the most popular networks in Greece.
In 2006, the company who originally launched Skai TV bought out Seven TV,
a holder of a National broadcasting licence that hadn't actually manage to
spread its coverage nationwide, then renamed it 'Skai TV' allowing the brand
to re-emerge on the Greek television scene.

The Skai TV programme places an emphasis on entertainment and information. The station has signed programming deals with world renowned documentary broadcasters National Geographic Channel, Discovery Channel and the BBC. It launched on April 1, 2006 with a limited schedule but as of October 2006 has managed to expand its coverage all over the country though terrestrial analog UHF broadcasting, is also receivable all over Europe via HELLASAT 2 Satellite (frequency 12524 V, SR 30000, FEC 5/6) and has enrichen its schedule with shows including The Oprah Winfrey Show, Doctor_Who, MythBusters, Takeshi's Castle and many more.

Skai TV is differentiating its broadcasting from the other mainstream broadcasters in two important ways. First of all, Skai dubs most foreign language content into Greek, instead of using subtitles. Secondly, Skai broadcasts mainly in 16:9 format whilst other Greek broadcasters have stuck to old-school 4:3 format.
