Size Zero

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Size 0 is a women's clothing size in the US catalog sizes system equivalent to a UK size 4. It is also a concept within the European fashion media relating to models with low body mass.

[edit] US catalog size

Bust size: 31.5 inches (80 cm); Waist size: 17.5.5 inches (60 cm); Hip size: 34 inches (86 cm). It is often mistaken to be a petite size because it is so small. While many petite women do wear size 0, the true definition of petite sizes in the fashion world has more to do with height than with frame; in the United States, it generally refers to a woman who is under 5'4".

[edit] Fashion concept

In European fashion circles, the concept of 'size zero' models has gained recent notoriety in the media when the organisers of Madrid fashion week 2006 prohibited models with a Body Mass Index below 18 - classified as underweight by the World Health Organisation - from participating in the event. International debate followed concerning the purported effects upon impressionable people of the fashion industy's continued use of underweight models. Models like teenager Lily Cole are main talking points in the on-going debate of the size 0 figure, is it natural or is it unhealthy?
