Six of the best
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
SIX OF THE BEST was the name chosen for the reunion concert of the rock band Genesis.
The show took place on October 2, 1982 at Milton Keynes Concert Bowl, in England. Vocalist Peter Gabriel had left the band in 1975. Genesis survived the loss, having its own drummer Phil Collins as a vocalist. The original quintet featuring Peter Gabriel, Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks, Steve Hackett and Phil Collins became a quartet during the period 1975-1977, being helped by an invited drummer on tours (Bill Bruford Ex-Yes and Ex-King Crimson and then Chester Thompson who became a session drummer for the band until 1992 and since 2006).
By 1978, Hackett had left and Genesis had became a trio. Peter Gabriel was continuing his solo career, doing some experimental music, but in 1982 he and his company WOMAD faced economic disaster. His ex-band mates and himself organized SIX OF THE BEST, a show for just one night with the original Genesis lineup (Hackett appearing during the encore) and including Daryl Stuermer (second guitarist and bassist on live shows 1978-1992, 2006-) and Chester Thompson. The money made that night helped Gabriel resume his solo career.
There are no "decent" sound recordings of the show; most of the material known to exist consists of bootlegs (called "Gabacabriel") with very poor or average sound quality. Video footage from the show almost certainly exists, but it remains in private hands.
