A site investigation is the study of a piece of land and its ground conditions previously to site development. The investigation may include a desk study of past land use, a walk-over survey, the digging of trial pits, the drilling of boreholes and the monitoring of groundwater and soil gas.

In the UK site investigations should follow the British Standard for Site Investigations BS5930:1999.
