Sir John A. Macdonald High School is the high school which all students in the Beechville Lakeside Timberlea area of Halifax Regional Municipality attend. The feeder schools are Five Bridges Junior High School, and Ridgecliff Middle School.
Sir John A. Macdonald High School (known as SJA or John A. by the students who attend the school) was built in the 1960's and has had its fair share of ups and downs over the years. The mascot is the "Flamer," hence the title "Sir John A Flames."
Some time ago the school had trouble with uranium in the water supply, but since then the school has been converted to 'city' water. In the school year of 2005-2006 the school had another brief run in with contaminated water for a span of three days.
The school is located in the Hubley section of the HRM district, in the subdivision across the street from Recardo's Pizza.
The school's principal, Terry Wadden, had his first year at SJA on the 2005-2006 school year. He was formerly the principal of Ridgecliff Middle School, accompanied by one Mrs. Judy Reynolds.
SJA's home has been moved. The school will be used, starting Sept of 2006, as the Tantallon Junior High School, and a new building has been constructed to accommodate the large quantities of students attending the school. The 2005-2006 school year SJA had approximately 1200 students registered. (But not all of those students attend on a regular basis.) The new school is said to be completed by September of 2006, school resumes on September, 8, 2006 for the students who attend SJA. This date is two days later than the rest of the schools in the HRM area, those schools return classes on September, 6, 2006.
