London | List of places in London |
Sipson is a place in the London Borough of Hillingdon situated near the northern perimeter of London Heathrow Airport and 14.3 miles (23 km) west of Charing Cross.
There are many different parts of Sipson: North Sipson, South Sipson, Sipson Road, Sipson Park a.k.a West Sipson and the Eastside. The North of Sipson is the quiet, pleasant side, with an interesting blend of farms and moderate-sized houses. The South of Sipson is known as the busy, congested side with dense traffic being commonplace (mainly off the M4 motorway). Sipson Road [1.6 miles (2.6km) in length) is the main road that runs through Sipson. Sipson Park is the main attraction in Sipson, with the Sipson Community Centre and Sipson's football team: Sipson Rovers being situated there. Lastly, the East Of Sipson, is the tourist part and the place where parties and special events take place.
Attractions in Sipson include a 24 hour McDonald's, Holiday Inn Hotel (Sipson Road M4 J4), three pubs, Sipson Community Centre, The British Legion and Heathrow Garden Centre.
The majority of the village may disappear because of BAA's plan to create a Third Runway at Heathrow Airport. However, plans have been delayed due to both pressure from NOTRAG (the local No Third Runway Action Group http://www.notrag.org/) and concerns over environmental damage. Residents remain split over whether to accept substantial compensation as some are prepared to reject financial settlement to protect the village.
Its name came from the Anglo-Saxon Sibbwines tūn = "Sibbwine's farmstead".
