  • Sterilization In Place (SIP) - a process using one or more components of food/drug processing equipment typically constructed of 304 or higher grade stainless steel. The process generally subjects the equipment to steam pressure(s) up to 25 psi(slightly variable depending on the process) and has sterilizing temperatures of at least 121.11° but usually no more than 125°C. The amount of time (exposure) the equipment "dwells" above 100°C is used in calculating (F sub 0) or lethality. This is used to determine "kill" levels of certain (hopefully most) microrganisms.
